Shaky Upload Speeds

The package that I'm subscribed to is 150down/10up and in the past couple of weeks it's been anything but that. 3mbps up is typically the absolute best I can hope for.

Called multiple times and those usually end with the call mysteriously dropping. Reset the modem using the tools in the backend here. Was even told to put cloth on the tip of the coax cable. None of them resulted in a better upload speed.

Last night I call and get stuck with the automated service and it restarts the modem like all the other times, but that time I get an upload speed I haven't seen since we upgraded to the package we're on now.

So I begin streaming video footage to gaming.youtube.com and shortly afterwards, everything drops and I check the upload speed again and it's back again to the .3 to 3mbps I've come to be disappointed in.

I know it says "up to 10", but at this point, what IS the point of the 150/10 service if I can only get 30% of that?

Is there anyone who has the same problem or knows how to fix it?

What!?  Who gave you that crazy idea?

Can you give some technical data? What model modem/gateway/router do you have? Wired or wireless? Post the speedtest results?

They said over the phone that it was apparently part of their training.

Modem = Motorola SB6120

Router = NETGEAR - Nighthawk

Speedtest.net = 70.91 down / 2.04 up

testmy.net = 896 kbps up

cox.net speedtest tool = 61.78 down / 8.51 up

This is all wired. CAT6 cables.

Hi DarrellDavies,

The 150Mbps/10Mbps package is the Premier Tier. The Motorola SB6120 is a 4x4 channel modem capable of supporting speeds of up to 80Mbsp. In order to take advantage of the higher speeds, you'll need to upgrade to an 8x4 (or higher) modem. You can purchase a modem from Cox or from any other retailer, as long as it is on the list of Cox-approved modems, found at http://bit.ly/CoxCMs.

Well looks like Cox is still hiring Car Salesman for technical trainers I see. I almost wish I could talk to this person.

Overall, +1 try a new modem. Nighthawk is a new router so should get modern modem to match.

Darrell,

Reading this thread and seeing what the cox rep said, it is true about your modem being 4x4. I had the same modem up until a week ago. I was also on the same package as you. Have since upgraded to the 6190 and ultimate tier 300/30.

However the 6120 has no problem whatsoever sustaining over 100 down and 15 up. I would actually peak out at 130 or so down and stay there. But my upload was ROCK SOLID at 15 MBPS up or wherever cox would throttle my upload too. So yes you might want to invest in another modem but the 6120 has no problems at 15MBPS up. Might want to look at signal levels. By typing 192.168.100.1 in your browser and go from there to see if it's you signal levels or the modem.

I'll try a new modem since it's been awhile anyways. I tried running speedtest last night at around 1:30AM and it was at 12mbps up.

Not quite sure how to make out the signal levels on 192.168.100.1, but I'll see if I can't figure it out.
