Setting up amplifier cable on splitter

On one of my HD TVs it was previously set up with an amplifier cable that was connected to a 2-1 splitter that had the incoming cable TV cable from the wall and the outgoing cable that went directly into my HD TV cable/TV antenna receptor.  I haven't had cable for a while and when I tried to set up the cable today I couldn't get a signal strong enough for my TV to receive or my DVD/VCR unit to work.  All I received were a small number of channels with snow.  I checked to make sure my automatic setup was set to cable and it went through the process of looking for analog and digital channels.  My HD TV and my DVD/VCR unit were both to channel 4, but it wouldn't work.

Would anyone know how the splitter or splitters are supposed to be setup with the amplifier and the incoming coaxial cable from the wall.  I found about a 4-5 inch piece of coaxial cable that was bent in the middle that must have been part of the setup, but I didn't know how it fit onto the splitter, along with the amplifier cable and the cable from the wall.

If you know how this is supposed to be set up, please let me know.

Thanks.

I ain't touching this one, unless you tell us exactly what equipment you have, and exactly what you want it to do. And, BTW, what the heck is an "amplifier cable"?

The typically setup would be to have a cable from the wall going to the "IN" on the splitter with one "OUT" going to the receiver and I am assuming what you call the amplifier cable is the power adapter, connected from the other "OUT" to an electrical outlet. The amplifier itself would still need to be connected, usually where the cable comes into the home. Can you verify if the amplifier is still connected? You will want to look for a gray or white box with 3 jacks labled "RF IN", "RF OUT", and "POWER IN" or something similar.
