send mail (smtp)

Why can I not send mail using the Cox SMTP server either from a mail client or directly via webmail?

@hlb

Are you getting any particular error message when you try to send?

From my client, there is no error message. It just shows that the outgoing mail in a state of processing to be sent. Eventually, messages are sent, but it can take 1/2 hour to finally send one short message. From web mail at Cox.net, there is a generic message of possible reasons for the failure to send a message from there, including ridiculous reasons like I am a spammer, or I have exceeded my quota of messages sent in some window of time. The last reason is most likely: there is a server problem. The slowness of sending messages varies greatly, sometimes fairly quick, but mostly 1/2 hour or more.

It may be worth changing your wireless password and checking all of your devices for viruses or other malware.  You can get that message if you have an infected device on your connection that is sending out excessive amounts of spam email which can often otherwise go undetected.

Welcome to the CLUB of people that can't send email.  No heroic measures are required.  Ignore all advice from tech support and the moderators.  Cox has had email problems since mid-November and has been unable/unwilling to fix.  It originally was limited to the West Coast but based upon recent posts t is now spreading throughout the Cox network.  For amusement you can read the over 20 posts and commiserate or you can file a complaint with the FCC website.  This will get the attention of Cox Corporate office and might get them to transfer you account to a mail server that has better performance.

Why are you telling people to contact the FCC? FCC has NOTHING to do with email. Thats like calling the FBI because your toilet is backed up.

And transferring an account to a mail server...what? Where are you getting that from? I don't think that's possible.

They tell me I might be spamming due to virus or malware on my computer. That does not explain why the failure occurs from Cox web mail directly. It does not explain why the behavior comes and goes randomly. It does not explain why unrelated devices using different cox mail accounts (by other family members) experience the same performance issues in an on and off fashion. One Cox employee that I engaged in an online chat session finally admitted that Cox was experiencing server issues, and their tech people were working on it. However, he had no indication of a time estimate for repair. On another occasion, the chat resulted in a complete denial of problems on their end. I was told my client program was configured incorrectly. Then, why would it suddenly start working with no configuration changes. I agree that the suspicion is that Cox is not fully owning up to the problem.

Note that excessive amounts of email are detected coming from your connection your connection will be added to a list of connections that are put into a "cooling off period".  So as to be effective in controlling the excessive volume of email, both webmail and the SMTP server enforce this.  Naturally this will stop the flow of email thus after a duration of time the restriction is lifted making the issue seem intermittent in nature and appear to start working on it's own.   Note that it may not be your computer sending the excessive email volume.  It could be any device with access to your Internet connection including all computers, cell/smart phones, tablets, etc. that are potentially offending.

Once more you have shown your ignorance.  I was told by Cox tech support that my mail account had been transferred from a mail server in California to one in Atlanta.  Service improved since the change - not perfect but better.  Keep your opinions of the veracity of other people's posts to yourself.  You do no service when you erroneously criticize others.  No one appointed you as a one man truth squad.

Im willing to offer the olive branch first; apologies for offending you and being confrontational. I think we all just want this email problem to go away, how ever that is possible.
