SBG6580

Cox,

Can you please work on getting the firmware update blown downstream to all the SBG6580 devices? I understand from Arris support that 8.5.x is a complete overhaul of the UI. It sure would be nice to have a brand new DOCSIS 3 modem without a copyright of 2011 branded on it.

Thanks

Brad

Firmware updates are usually deployed automatically based on the needs of the network once thoroughly tested for compatibility issues.  I took a look at your modem and it appears to be running the most current approved firmware version.  Updates when the become available are usually deployed during our evening  maintenance window.

Chris, So you're telling me the entire router is held hostage to Cox and their timeline? Who decides what a patches or enhancements get applied to the physical router? I get it you want to control what is your COAX, but what about security updates or code enhancements to the wireless interface or switched ports, don't we (owners) get a say? I'm pretty sure you can maintain your side (WAN) while updating our side (LAN). I'm a returning customer this month after a 4 year hiatus; I wish I knew this ahead of time. Thank You Brad

Unfortunately with the integrated gateway devices the modem and router are not separate and use a single firmware. That being the case, it is not possible to isolate updates to the modem or router function.  In those situations firmware deployments are at the discretion of the provider.  If you are a power user that prefers to be able to apply router updates on your own a separate modem/router solution would probably be preferable.

Chris, Yes I get it I can purchase another router and update and play to my hearts content, but I already shelled out the money for what I thought was a wireless router that I don't apparently own. Do you not see my point? Buy a new car, but the gas must delivered by the dealership. When they get around to it or when that octane or brand has been approved. BS! man, BS! Thanks Brad

I fully agree with every point you've mentioned.  Unfortunately that is simply not how the device works.  Modem firmware is managed by the Internet provider based on the provider's needs.  In the case of gateway devices where the modem and router are the same, there is no separate router firmware.

I currently have a SBG6580 with the following configuration:

Standard Specification Compliant DOCSIS 3.0
Hardware Version 3
Software Version SBG6580-3.5.8.4-GA-00-505-NOSH

I have experienced intermittent connection issues and speeds, which require a reset of the router to correct. From what I have been reading on this modem/router it has been an issue since 2013.

Am I on the latest approved version of SW approved by Cox? If not, how can I request a push of latest FW.

My initial config apparently was incorrect. My first call into Cox the tech determined that I had the wrong config installed on my router. That solved my connection speeds at the wire level, but I never got any satisfaction with the built in WiFi of the 6580. I disabled the WiFi internally on the 6580 and hung my NETGEAR AC1900-Nighthawk as the primary WiFi host for my LAN.

My spotty WiFi issues are a thing of the past.

I believe your FW of your 6580 is correct even though it has a stupid old copyright date on the router UI.  As I understand when Cox gets around to it they'll update our routers.  I'm not holding my breath.

Thanks for the  response/info!

I have considered using my previous Cisco Router, but haven't pulled the trigger yet. My wife just told me she has to reset the 6580 at least once a day, which I wasn't aware that it was that bad until just now. Since it always recovers I am hoping the Cable Modem configuration is solid and it is just something with the router. I made a couple suggested changes from another site I found, and will see if that helps with the WiFi stability.

It's just disappointing that a product released around 2010 still has problems that have been reported for years... If I were Cox I would remove the 6580 from its CableModem/Router supported list, until they can qualify and roll out a much needed patch. I am sure the moderator who has been commenting on this same issue for 3 years would agree...

@bq

I looked from here and the firmware version does appear to be the most current approved version.  Do you also see problems with wired connections?

bq,

I double checked my firmware;

SBG6580-3.5.8.4-GA-00-505-NOSH

So, yeah were in the same row boat. Might want to have them check your modem config and make sure your getting the bandwidth you're paying for.

I still think this is a hoot.

Hi ChrisL,

Good point, next time I am at home when it locks I will test the wired connections first before resetting. That should help to isolate it to a Wifi or modem setup issue.

Thanks for confirming the FW is "Cox" current...
