SB6190 issues on Cox Network

Purchased the SB6190 from Newegg.com, had modem provisioned on the Cox network, began experiencing latency issues, intermittent connectivity issues, low upload speeds. Currently subscribed to Cox HSI Ultimate Tier and using the SB6183 which is locked on to 16x4 channels. Is there a software version for the SB6190 other than the 9.1.93D. When pinging the SB6190 directly without a router, the modem appears to have high internal latency's. Can anyone else confirm this by pinging 192.168.100.1 and reporting the min, max. and avg. latency's? I'm not seeing the latency's when I ping the SB6183, so I'm skeptical as to the proper provisioning of the SB6190 since I haven't seen any software version for the SB6190 other than the 9.1.93D, if Cox is working on a configuration or firmware update please let us know, I'd like the SB6190 to operate as well as the SB6183 does now.

I think there is a known firmware issue with the SB6190 that delays ICMP packets, giving a false negative of packet loss. From what I heard, it doesn't effect performance, because internet only uses TCP and UDP packets. They mentioned a firmware fix that is on the way. I tried to find the post on it, but I can't even remember which forum it was on. Anyone else remember?

Looks like I'll have to use the SB6183 until Cox has a configuration file and firmware update for the SB6190. Hopefully it won't be too long before the SB6190 is working as good as the SB6183 does on the cox network.

Does anyone know if the firmware has been updated yet? Or an ETA? I am in the predicament of choosing which to buy. Please see my relevant post, "Arris SB6190".

One of the Cox techs on DSLR told me that the firmware update for the SB6190 was currently being tested in Cox's lab so hopefully they will roll it out to our modems soon.

Relates to both modems: SB6183, SB6190

Is your modem's upstream bond channel power between 51 dBmV - 45 dBmV?

  • SB6190
  • SB6183

Both modems need a an upstream bonded channel power signal 51 dBmV - 45 dBmV.

Without this signal, they will experience performance issues.

Suggested solutions for Cox:

Use attenuator: to adjust

Add new / change current splitter configuration

Adjust amplifier / service amplifier at house / service port at street

My SB6183 levels are currently well below that level and connection speeds are extraordinarily intermittent.

I'm having a rep come back to my house tomorrow to fix this problem.

Please don't spam suggestions. Signal levels are important and a leading cause of connection issues but I don't see why you are focusing on just those two models? The SB6190 uses a totally different chipset. If you are claiming a compatibility issue then please present your data.

Two Arris tech support reps I've worked with recently put any further troubleshooting on hault, after discovering this problem with the upstream bonded channel power signal.  Every Cox tech support rep I've worked with recently could not even diagnose this problem.

Yes, I see that Arris has other new models of stand alone modems.  These two modems are popular topics of discussion on this forum.  They are both approved for use by cox, that's for sure.   Arris tech support stated that unless these upstream bonded channel power signals are within range, users will likely experience performance related problems.  Without being within range, these modems do not have sufficient signals to operate, according to their capabilities.

chris_c21, thank you very much.  That sounds promising and I'm now leaning towards getting the SB6190 since upgrade to 300/30 and 24 down channels within a year seems very likely for my area.  Do you think I'll notice the issues much in real world application?  If they're livable, I'll definitely purchase the 6190 despite firmware problems.

Hopefully this is not off-topic. I just installed this modem last week and noticed the ICMP issue. However, in my testing, there is no issue with TCP and UDP. I tested this using TCP ping and UDP ping. There's also no issue with streaming or VoIP. I only wish that Cox had more channels in my are (Metairie, LA). I'm getting 12/4 (12 downstream, 4 upstream).

@jam905

I know the ICMP issue is on Arris's radar so to speak.  Beyond that I haven't seen any news of a coming update however.
