Running Motorola SBG6580 DOCSIS 3.0 Only Getting 163MBPS Connected Via Ethernet Service Is For 300MBPS

Hello everyone I have a Motorola SBG6580 modem and I'm connected via a brand new CAT6 cable and I'm only getting 163MBPS when I should be getting 300MBPS.

If you check the Amazon listing for the Motorola SBG6580 you'll see that it mentions:

  • DOCSIS 3.0 Certified, Download speeds up to 343 Mbps and Upload speeds up to 131 Mbps based on your Internet Service Provider.
yet the tech that installed my service told me I would need a new modem to get the full 300MBPS?
What do you guys think?

Nope. First, I think you mean 300Mb, not MB. Second, in order to get the 300Mb plan you need a modem or gateway with atleast 16 downstream channels. That's because Cox doesn't want a bunch of people in one area saturating 8 channels of bandwidth when it can instead be spread over 16 lanes. See here for a list of devices and their approved service plans.

The thing is, the 343 Mbps mentioned on the listing is the THEORETICAL maximum, not the expected performance. Cox wants your modem's theoretical max to be at least double your plans speed.

If you want the Ultimate 300 Mbps plan, you will need a modem that has a theoretical maximum of 600Mbps or higher. Which is, like Teck said, a 16-channel modem with a 686 Mbps max.

TLDR: Your current gateway isn't powerful enough for 300 Mbps, you need at least, but preferably higher, a 16-channel one.

Also, if/when you do upgrade to a 16+ channel modem and call to have it added, ask them to make sure you have the "Ultimate 300" service code on your account.

Hi Victor,

A DOCSIS 3.0 16x4 modem (or higher) is required to achieve the increased speed of the Ultimate Tier. Did the technician explain the available options? You can rent a Premium WiFi Modem from Cox, purchase a DOCSIS 3.0 (16x4) modem from Cox, or purchase a DOCSIS 3.0 (16x4) modem from any other retailer. If you purchase a modem from another retailer, be sure it is on the list of Cox-approved modems, found at http://bit.ly/CoxCMs.
