Router losing connection to Cable Modem
I had a problem which started a few months ago. For no reason at random times my Router (Apple Time Capsule 3TB) keeps dropping my cable modem connection for internet.
I replaced the cable modem with 2 different models - same issue. I replace the time capsule with a brand new unit - same problem.
It happens after various amounts of time. Often when I am not even at home.
I reboot the router and all is fine again for a day or 2.... I cannot figure out why this is happening. I checked the logs for the cable modem and there is little or nothing indicating any problem. So I don't think the modem or cable connection is to blame.
I don't understand what could have started causing this. But it's certainly frustrating.
Any ideas on what I can check within my Time Capsule logs or settings to isolate this?
Thanks in advance!

What model modem do you have?
Also, when the problem happens, do you lose any lights on the front?
Can you post the modem logs from around the time of one of the events? Please admit any "CM Address" or MAC address for privacy reasons.
As for the Time Capsule logs, Apple no longer supports them on Airport Utility 5.6 and later. So to see them you actually have to downgrade the software. See here for more info.

What does this mean? Is there anyway of finding out what that technically signifies? IE failing a DHCP renew, losing gateway IP, DNS fail, etc.
My guess is something with DHCP aggression and how fast it responds to IP lease renewal. In the past it may not have been as much a issue as more IPs were available, the rotation period may have been longer.
Also, you may want to check IPv6 on the Airport. If Cox is doing something new there maybe the router is trying, but failing, to acquire a IPv6 address. If possible, disable it.
If so, you may be helped better at the Apple forum. No harm in 2 threads.

Orange means no internet connection - that's all Apple tells you. It doesn't state if DHCP, gateway, or DNS is failed. Got home checked log on modem - not a single entry for 3 days. Modem was up and running. Rebooted apple time capsule and restored service. Did nothing else.
DHCP was set to 1 day - it lasted 3 since last failure. I changed it to 7. IPV6 is set to Automatic. Not sure what to change there.....
For a month I haven't been able to solve this at all.
Gonna put my old Wireless-N router back online and see what happens. I really like and need my Time Capsule - but not if it doesn't work! Will just sell it and get a newer router and an external NAS to handle the time machine backups if it proves out..
I've tried everything else! Unless someone has new ideas. It's not the devices themselves - as they have all changed (Both routers and modems). Something else in the environment. And I haven't changed any computers or devices either. Not sure if Cox changed anything or not - but would expect others and not just me to be complaining.
Frustrating. This started last month and I thought it was related to Cox blocking my uploads to Amazon - that wasn't the case at all.

Need more data from the time capsule. Maybe try to find some way to access it via terminal? The Apple hardware makes it hard to get any info they don't consider important. ]
Is it possible to connect a computer to the modem for a day? See what happens to the IP on the PC when the connection drops. Would give us a clue of whats going on.

The modem never drops - if I connect a computer to it directly it works fine and never drops. So you won't get any clues there - I really don't think it's anything on the modem side or maybe Cox side unusual.
I'm pretty much done with Apple and the Time Capsule. Sending it back today. I don't have time to keep troubleshooting it. There isn't any information available and it seems isolated to my environment. It proved problematic months ago when I first posted that it dropped during an Amazon cloud backup.
I put my old Netgear dual band on for now until I can remove and return the Apple device and send it back to Amazon (thank god for Prime), and then I'll order something new. Fortunately the other Apple Time Capsule I had sold on ebay too. So I won't be out any money.
Sorry Apple - but you made this unstable for me... :-) Great device idea. I love using it for both Mac Backup via Time Machine and asa router and it performs wonderfully. But it's just been a headache. Taking away logs was a silly move with the new Airport Utility. So yeah, if we had some data we could probably solve this.

Well - this is just crazy! One week after installing the new Netgear router - same problem is back. Internet connection from modem to router just dropped. I had to go into the netgear and fix connection. Nothing in the log to indicate why. No warning - just stopped working right in the middle of using my laptop.
So now I have tried 3 different routers and 3 different modems and all combinations of these devices, and the same problem keeps occurring. In my years in IT I haven't ever seen anything like this on a simple home network. So either some traffic outside or some device (one of my computers, Apple TV, xbox, etc.) is killing it.
I really thought this was an Apple compatibility issue, but now I'm back to square one - well at least I saved some money and have a nice router. Does me no good if I have to keep resetting it though.
Does anyone have any ideas. I checked the logs on the netgear administrator and there is nothing of an error or message that would give a clue.
The only clue I have - it's been exactly 1 week since I installed the Netgear. DHCP lease renewal problem??? Thoughts?
Help!!!!!!! I had 10 years of Cox service to this house and no problems until recently. And now I can't get a stable connection from my modem to my router.
Wifi was fine, router seemed fine. Just the internet connection to the modem. Was just reading facebook posts at the time. Not even streaming or anything.
Sorry gang - sure could use some input.

How often does it happen? Maybe check what DHCP IP your getting, and then setting that as static? That will only work for so long, but if longer then the timeframe between problems, it would at-least tell you if it's a DHCP issue. I don't think it's inbound, since changing the router also changes your public IP. Other then that, I am out of ideas. Sorry.

For a while it was happening almost daily (on the Apple Routers), lately it's been about 1x a week.. But yeah, DHCP has come to mind as a culprit - but that hasn't resolved anything in the past. DHCP is set to renew 24 hours on router. So that doesn't jive.
I think unfortunately it's time to move to something other than COX, because nothing else in my environment has changed. This started 2-3 months ago, and regardless of new equipment, new computers, new cabling, new UPS, nothing has eliminated the issue.
Cox blames, me, and I blame them (sort of). They have checked my connection, and it's solid - nothing drops on their end to the modem.
I'm using the same modem for the past couple of years, and like I have mentioned for nearly 10 years this environment has been stable (with modem and router upgrades every 3 years on average) and nothing like this has ever surfaced.
Like you mentioned DHCP lease on the WAN side appears to be expiring and not renewing properly from Cox. At least it seems that way. Especially since it happened exactly 1 week after the new router went up, and it happened 1 week prior to that before I pulled the Apple router out. What's special about 1 week?
Since I'm already looking into a replacement for DirecTV too, I think I will cross cox off my list and consider CenturyLink - good prices and maybe what's needed to get better speed for the money and no more drops... I work at home a lot and need a stable environment. Even though fortunately this is a minor issue - but I keep files on my home NAS that I cannot access if I am not home when the router drops internet...

The only router settings I have changed are on the wifi side to secure it etc... has nothing to do with the WAN side.. I've had 3 different routers (2 different brands and 3 different models) and the same issue every time. I don't think that is the root cause of anything.
Just happened again just now. Modem lights showed some loss.... logs on modem show following..
Problem cleared itself up in 2-3 minutes this time... generally I lose the internet and have to go into router and fix it - not this time - so slightly different behavior tonight... Checked router log and saw nothing unusual. Typical traffic in the house - a few streaming connections going - netflix living room and youtube in office. Froze for 5 minutes and looked at modem and caught upstream and downstream lights flicking like a reboot occurred. My wife was in that room and testifies that nothing out of ordinary happened that she could tell (no power loss or anything). UPS was quiet.
Anyone know what this message means? Maybe the modem side is causing some issues after all?
Determined I will figure this out - I hate to drop cox too. Been a customer for 15 years or more!!!!!

A series of these log entries also appeared right before today's incident, and according to the logs the modem lost power.... Again, I will state that the modem is on a UPS - same one my desktop is on. Nothing lost power. So could this all be a bad modem (note that I tried 2 new modems ARRIS and a Netgear on my Apple routers and both caused internet loss on both routers...
So different issue perhaps? Any ideas if the log entries below would cause the modem to cycle?
