Required Internet Package for Netflix Viewing

I've been with Cox for a few years now and have always had the Preferred Internet Package.  I did some research, I found that Netflix only requires 5 Mbps to display HD.  Why does Cox warn people that you NEED the Preferred 50Mbps internet package?  My internet works just fine now that I switched over to the Starter Internet.

Does anybody else have any issues with the 5Mbps internet?

Where does Cox warn that? I just used Cox speed advisory, and I have to say it was more accurate then I expected. To a certian extent, you should always take what your ISP tells you what you need with a grain of salt, but this actually suggested the Preferred package I already had.

It could be the suggested Preferred when it was only 15Mbps. Part of it is there are the speed requirements of Netflix direct, and then there are the speed requirements of your entire house. How many people watch Netflix in your house at once? What about using the internet for other things? Those questions are more relevant then how much you need just for Netflix.

Yeah you are definitely right.  I do live alone... So I'm the only person using it.  And I don't play Xbox live... So all I need it for is Netflix. And the downgrade works just the same for what I've been using it for.

Another thing to consider is bandwidth cap. You may have enough speed to stream Netflix and other things, but if you stream it alot, you may go over your limit. Starter is 150GB so you would need to watch ALOT of Netflix, but it's still possible.

Before, caps weren't enforced very often by Cox, but as bandwidth congestion becomes more and more a issue, Cox is changing how they do things. Before, they would only activly monitor nodes that were congested for people using bandwidth beyond their cap. This means if you lived in a relatively non-populated place, you could go over your cap and not be concerned.

Now, they are starting to put hard caps in place. Cleveland is the first place, but it will probably spread to other markets. I hope Cox changes how they advertise their plans to make this change clear.

Actually, Netflix requires up to 5.7Mbps for their SuperHD stream.  You can get lower quality HD at lower bandwidth ... 3Mbps will give you 720P and about 4Mbps will get you a 1080P stream.  You can check your actual bandwidth by playing the following 11 min clip: "Example Short 23.976".  Just search for it and stream ... will show you the actual bandwidth and quality you are receiving.  If it shows 5800Kbps you are receiving the best quality Netflix has to offer.
