Replace Modem Questions
I previously posted in here and received a fast response from Health Edge. Thanks, I really appreciated that. I have now decided to to go ahead and and purchase an Arris/Motorola SB6141 modem. I will just be substituting my present modem for the new one.
A few questions about doing this.
1. I think I need to call Cox and register the MAC address of the new modem. Do I do this before or after I install the new modem?
2. How do I insure that I have the newest Service Code and newest firmware on the new modem?
3. My present setup is a coaxial cable coming into the house from Cox is hooked to the old Linksys WRT54G2 modem. Next, that modem in turn is hooked by ethernet cable to a Cox Home Security modem, and the Cox Home Security modem in turn, is hooked by ethernet cable to my Linksys SB5101 Router. This wireless network services 2 desktops and occasionally 1 laptop. All internet and home security is working well now. Being not too tech savvy, my question is - can I just unplug the current modem and hook the new SB6141 modem to this setup and go? Or, are there steps I am missing. Sorry for my ignorance, but I don't do this often and I want to be sure I don't mess it up.
Any helpful info and assistance will be much appreciated. Thanks.

Hi John,
Yes you will need to call Cox to register the Mac ID of the modem, it will have to be connected before you call them.
Cox will take care of the service code and firmware (if needed) after the connection is activated.
There may be some special steps to take because you have the home security network installed. Best to tell them the setup when you call to get the modem activated and they can help you proceed from there. I doubt very much that you will have any issues with the router, it will just require a reboot after activating the modem.

OK - I decided to call Cox Tech Support. She advised me all I need to do is install the new modem in the place where the old modem is installed. Then I should call them and register the new modem. They will activate the new modem, upgrade the firmware, and check the service code......hopefully it will be that simple when I try it next week. Wish me luck! Thanks.
