Remotes for Contour

We have the new Contour DVR installed along with the standard remote. We time shift almost everything, so we want to be able to skip through commercials.  The remote has a "fast forward" control, but not a "skip" button that lets you jump ahead by 30 or 60 seconds, which is very handy.  The old Cox receiver we had (from two years ago) had this control, and the DirecTV system we dropped to go back to Cox also had this "skip" control.  Are there any remotes available for the new Contour that include this control?  This is the one thing my wife is complaining about with the new Cox system.

You sure the old system had a skip forward button and not a skip back 30seconds button? I knew Time Warner, DirectTV and Tivo had it, but I thought it only works with Cox through a controller hack or a 3rd party remote.

Absolutely - we loved the "skip" button (which is what Dish used to call it).

How did it work on a Cox remote? What button did you press?

There was a "Skip Forward" curved arrow on the remote that jumped forward 30 or 60 seconds (I can't remember the exact jump).  I no longer have the remote.  I have looked at all the current Cox remotes, and none have this button.  Logitech has some universal remotes that say they can be programmed to emulate this function - but I am not sure, since normally they only emulate functions present on the original remote, and this function is not present on the existing remotes.

Do you mean the button to the left of the DVR list button on the URC 7820 remote? See here for picture If so, thats a skip BACK 6 seconds button, not skip forward. If you had a remote that could do it, then it was worth it's weight in gold. Did it look like any of these?

I can also confirm this feature existed with combination of the 7820 remote and Rovi (non-contour) DVRs.

to activate it one would just quickly double press the play button.

I I also miss this since "upgrading" my system to Contour Record 6 DVR.

Thank you. Sorry I pulled the thread somewhat off course. I wish I had known that back when I had my Motorola DVR from Cox. Learn something new every day.  Are those the same DVR that also had PIP that worked?

No problem. We loved the skip forward button (on the old Cox DVR and the DirecTV receiver). I dropped Cox originally because the old DVR was so horrible - I had to reboot it almost daily, and it would freeze for several minutes several times a day. No way would I want to go back to that! (In addition, the Cox signal to our neighborhood would drop out for several channels my wife wanted to watch.) The service is much more reliable now and the new DVR works pretty well. (The one advantage that the DirecTV "Genie" receiver had is the "skip forward" button, and the fact that the remote used RFI and not IR so you didn't have to point it at the receiver and response was very fast. However, the bill had grown so much it was crazy. Cox gave me a really good deal and everything has worked fine. I got a very good install too that fixed other issues, so I am happy with my choice now. I just miss "skippy"! David

We submit all feedback like yours to our video programming team with hope that some of the feature suggestions will be made available in future product updates.

Thanks for taking the time to post your feedback!

I would LOVE for this feature to make it in.  One of my biggest qualms about switching to Cox was the loss of this feature.

If you're watching an NFL game, you hit the 30-second skip five times (usually, sometimes 3) and you pass the commercial.  If you're watching a college football or roundball game, you hit it four times.  If you're watching primetime TV, you hit it six or eight times, depending on the station.

This nearly always puts you in the exact place, whereas fast forwarding takes you longer and is less precise.

It would be great if they would take the left and right arrow keys and let them do a 30-second skip.
