Remote doesn't function properly and not able to get an answer from Cox

We just switched to an HD cable box and they gave us a new remote.  The remote works at times but mostly doesn't work at all.  I have followed the instructions on the back of the remote to make sure it is linked up with the cable box and it will at times work for a short time when I do that.  Today it will not work at all.  I can turn the TV on and off, adjust volume and turn the cable box on and off and that is it.  I took the remote into the Cox store and they gave me another one.  I asked him what I was doing wrong and he told me to follow the instructions on the back of the remote.  We are having the same problems with this 2nd remote as with the 1st remote.  What do I do now?  I did the online chat and was told to go to the troubleshooting area on this site. I am getting ready to go to satellite.  What else should I do?

If you're looking for assistance with changing channels and navigating the interactive program guide be sure you push the Cable button on the top of the remote to switch it into Cable mode first.  You should then be able to change channels or press Guide to access the interactive program guide.

We have tried pushing the cable button on the top of the remote and it still doesn't work. After the Cox rep. reset the cable box yesterday it worked for a short time and then wouldn't work again.  So we are basically unable to watch cable tv even though we are paying a prime price for it.  When I call tech support they tell me to take the remote to the store which I have done and it still doesn't work.

Perhaps it's the box and not the remote that is having the problem.  Another possibility is do you have lots of flourescent light sources in the room or perhaps other devices that could be generating infrared interference?

I've had that issue as well - 2 tricks:  reboot the cable box (annoying) and point the remote toward the ceiling.  I don't know why that second one seems to work, but I usually try that before the reboot.  Good luck!

1. When you try and change channel, make sure the cable button at the top flashes, not the TV button. If so you just aren't in the correct mode. Press the cable button and try again.

2. Test the TV interference issue. There should be a light on the box (Motorola only) that flashes when it sees an IR signal from the remote. Turn off your TV, then see if the box IR indicator lights up. If it does with the TV off, but not on, the TV is "blinding" the cable box. Try turning down the back light on the TV a little. You can also try other turning other things in the room off like Inferred heaters and light bulbs.
