First, what kind of Fax machine do you have? The different methods depend partly on the technical abilities of the Fax.

Second, by default, calls go to Voicemail after 4 rings. You can set your Fax to pick up in less then that, but then you will have to disconnect/turn off your fax when ever your not using it, otherwise no calls will go to Voicemail. You can also change the number of rings fallowing these instructions, but you will face the same issue.

Distinctive Ring Fax (not to be confused by normal Distinctive Ring) is a feature that creates a 2nd phone number tied to your current phone number. When called, it rings on your normal lines, but with a special ring or "cadence". You then need to set your fax machine to only pick up when it detects this special ring tone. This is good if you only receive the occasional fax, but since its a virtual line, and not a real one, you still won't be able to make or receive faxes if the phone is in use.
