ReadyShare in Netgear CG4500BD gateway
I bought Netgear CG4500BD gateway from Cox in November and thought it will have "readyshare" USB/external hard drive access but when I connect the drive it does not populate the location. I use Mac OSX 10.9.1. The info says that I can connect USB/external drive as ReadyShare access it. But when I connect it to the USB port, I can not find them. I use smb://readyshare. Can you help me connect it. And I can not use "routerlogin.net". I just talked to Cox geek squad and they seem to have no clue about the ReadyShare. I think somehow Cox has flashed it and deactivated the ReadhyShare option which seems frustrating; why you will do that? When I asked the Cox tech support then they said they will not know and do not have access to these info. I think it is not great idea to limit the options. I am stuck with Cox as we only have cox; otherwise I would change my service provider. Hope this message is read by Cox folks and will provide some solution to fix it.
Thanks

That is NOT Cox geek squad. I will NOT stand for the Cox Tech Solutions (CTS) name to be tarnished so. CTS was once in house, filled with a bunch of very hard working people, but then before it could go national, they pulled the rug out from under it and outsourced the work to a company called Plumchoice. They are the Kmart of Technical Support in the industry.
Anyway, I too find it frustrating that Cox would modify the firmware from the official release without making release notes public. I understand the intention of making it user friendly, but you can have user friendly without being incompetent. Pretty sure Verizon and the ActionTec gateways have readyshare and port forwarding and other abilities. Why would Cox copy Verizon (pretty much the main reason they sell gateways) but then shoot themselves in the foot by disabling features? The only reason I can think of is they knew they support options were too limited to support the features of the device....so they just disabled them Pardon my rant, but you opened up a old wound.

Chris,
I thought this is kind of standard response as I read the same in CG3000 model someone replied from Cox. I do not see any reason that enabling this feature which actually comes with gateways is kind of lame excuse (no offense intended) because we live in the time to new tech that is evolving and Cox sales one of those high tech router but disables the most useful function. I will argue that by enabling this ReadyShare option will NOT effect any general customers. There is not point of buying new router which does the same thing when I paid almost $150 for this piece of equipment. I will request Cox to all the option to enable the ReadyShare option. BTW, I am software developer by profession and know for sure it is not going to effect the regular customer. Hope you will be able to help.
Thanks

This isn't an easy issue issue to address however I'll try to explain further the best I can. The Readyshare feature wasn't something we were prepared to offer as how it has nothing to do with the Internet service itself. Unfortunately Netgear wasn't willing to offer us equipment that did not have the USB ports. Because we don't the feature it was determined that it would not be a good overall customer experience to offer an option that one could not obtain support for as how we don't provide assistance for this feature and Netgear does not support these gateways. I'll certainly pass along your request to have the option enabled.

I think its a little more complicated then that. Doesn't Netgear charge different prices to providers based on the firmware features they choose? I remeber when the CG3000DV1 was in Beta and the device didn't even have a reset function from the UI. It didn't have any logs. Its a shame that Cox would punish their customers with a inferior product just because they didn't want to spend the money training their representatives enough to support that product.
I believe Cox never gave Home Networking the attention it deserved, and thats why they fail at it IMHO. I don't mean this as a personal attack, since all the employees here have always been nice and helpful, but more a comment on the way Cox as a company has changed directions in the last 3-4 years.
