Question about Modem/Telephone upgrade

We  just upgrade are modem.  When we first setup cox we did subscribe to phone, but we do not use the phone,  So I was wondering when I get the new modem do I even have to setup the telephone, since we do not use that feature, we only use the internet. Then this is shows up in the shipping confirmation:

another provider:

Short answer: No

I cant think of any technical reason why you would need to hook up telephone service if you don't plan to use it. The warning is mostly talking about the fact that billing either starts when you activate the service, or automatically 10 days after you put in the order. Its basic CYA because some people think if they don't hook up the phone service, they won't have to pay for it.

With that said, if you have a phone modem, you still have to call up and have your internet service activated for the internet to work. You just don't have to hook up any phone wires to the modem.

if your not using Cox for phone you are supposed to turn the phone modem in and get a modem only without phone support.

I agree that is what your "supposed" to do, but it may be to OP benefit not to. Cox will charge (either rent or buy) for a internet modem, but they can't charge you for a internet/phone modem. Also he would get the benefit of the battery backup. However that same battery can sometimes cause issues if it starts to go bad IMO.

I got a email from cox saying  upgrade you cable modem free of charge.  When I signed up for cox a while back we were going to do the phone, but the tech had a hard time setting it up so they left us with the Internet/Telephone modem.
