Phone install help

I'm considering getting a cox phone line in addition to the cable and internet I currently have.

Right now my cable modem is on my entertainment center, in the living room. I only have 2 phone jacks in my house - 1 in the kitchen and 1 in the master bedroom.

What all has to be connected for a phone line??

I will be using this as a work line only to do inbound customer service calls. A corded phone is required, no cordless. So i will need to be within reasonable distance from the jacks.

Any help?

First, if your going to be using the phone as a customer service line, you probably want a Cox Business line. Their Voicemanager platform has a lot of options that are missing on the residential side. Also, there are certain terms of service (ToS) issues that should be considered.

With that said, first thing you need to find out is if you would be using a inside (eMTA) or outside (NIU) phone modem. NIU are big grey plastic containers about the size of a shoe box, and would be found outside your house, usually where the cable line attaches to your house.

If you have a NIU, then the installation is simplified, since the installer will make sure which ever lines you need are activated when they are there. If you don't have a NIU, then you will probably need a phone modem (eMTA). This can either be in replacement of your internet modem, or you can have a separate modem for phone and internet. If you do use the eMTA for both, it would need to be in a room with the computer, cable jack, phone jack and electrical outlet.

It sounds like there isn't a phone jack in your living room, so you would either have one installed, use a separate phone modem and have that installed in the master bedroom/ You might also be able to have the phone modem installed in your basement or where ever your punchblock is located. This would connect the modem to which ever lines are connected to that block.

Hope that helps.
