Phoenix-area email problem. Server rejected password

I have not had this problem for over a month.  It first appeared in November, 2014.  When i open my POP email account, the dialog box says " The POP server pop.cox.net rejected the password for user "my email address". Please reenter your password (re-entering the password never works).   I can send but not receive emails. The problem usually lasts for 1-2 hours, then clears up without me having to do anything.  Sometimes it only lasts for minutes. Sometimes it re-occurs several times in the same day.  I phoned Cox and all of my settings are correct.  The Cox moderators of this forum checked my settings and found them to be correct.  I have had no problems (except for this one) with my Cox email for 10 years.  Several commentators said that the problem is linked to AppleMail and Apple products.  i am using an iMac. Other commenters said that Cox was having problems with their servers ( a Cox tech confirmed this when i called for help).

The moderators on this forum always ask if my webmail is affected. I seldom use it. Today i went to my webmail.  The page loaded fine. I could see all of my emails in the inbox. When i went to open an email, the message appeared "problems fetching message headers".  All of the email headers disappeared. So the problem does seem to affect webmail too.

@yak

The webmail issue with problems fetching headers often occurs if you're in webmail while a POP client is fetching messages.  Are your emails turning up on another device?

@TiffanyR.  Only one email address; one computer, one profile, no smartphone.  The recent problem lasted less than an hour.  But it came at a time when i had to receive emails for my business.
