Packet loss

Hello,

I'm an avid user of the internet and frequently play online games of some variety or another. As of a month or two ago I started noticing spike of in game lag and, based on the affect on gameplay, suspected it to be packet loss.

Using the command line, I tried some ping tests. One test of 500 packets sent yielded 491 received, ~1% lost. This seems rather small, but every time I have run this I get similar results. For gaming purposes, 1% loss constantly is beyond irritating. I'm hoping that the source can be tracked downed and corrected.

I appreciate any help I can get, Thanks

@gears

I took a look at the modem from our end however no obvious issues stand out.  Do you have any trace routes showing the packet loss?

I've not had any experience with doing trace routes. Trying from the command line didn't show any loss after the few attempts I tried. An online trace route showed the following http://www.monitis.com/traceroute/index.jsp?url=104.160.131.1&testId=1203079 If there's a specific set of things I should try that may help diagnose a problem, I'll try anything

@gears

From a windows command line you can run "tracert " where host is the hostname or IP address you want to test the connection to.

Here's the first ping test I did and a tracert I tried that showed some problems.

The trace route looks good so it's hard to say where the ping command is detecting packet loss.  There's a program called pingplotter that may be more helpful with catching intermittent issues.  I'll also add that performance issues with Twitch is a complaint we frequently see.  So far all the troubleshooting data provided to us seems to indicate the problem may not be related to Internet connectivity.

PingPlotter is a rather useful tool. Here are a few samples that I tried that showed some problems.

This does give us a little more useful info.  The first results appears as though it's ICMP de-prioritization as how your traffic reaches the intended destination without loss.  The second result looks like it may be detecting some loss on Level3's network which would be outside of our control.  Do you see similar loss trying this test to other sites?

I tried a few other sites, so far it seems pretty consistent. Of the trials that I ran, about 3 of 4 sites I tried show some amount of loss with a few showing quite a lot. Few more examples below

Hi Gears,

Please post trace route results like you did for twitch.com for a couple of other (non-Cox) websites. If there are gaming or streaming sites you use frequently, seeing the trace routes to those sites would be very helpful.

Becky,

I put together a few more results from pingplotter here. http://imgur.com/a/zRWQ7 I hope the information can help resolve this in some way.

While the modem's connection appears to be responding okay the packet loss starting after its handing off there is the largest concern with those results. Are you able to ping the 98.173.132.145 Ip address for 100 or so times, with the  "ping 98.173.132.145 -t" command, to stop the test you can hit ctrl-c and confirm how much loss is showing over the course of time?

Using the ""ping 98.173.132.145 -t" I let it go for a few minutes. 316 packets sent, 0 lost. Average response time of 8ms

Thank you for providing the ping test results, those actually look really good.  There was no packet loss and the response time was really good at 8 ms.
