new DOCSIS 3.0 cable modem, wireless is now slow as molasses. router problem?

I recently upgraded to a DOCSIS 3.0 cable modem, Cisco model DPQ3212.  The end result is that I have very slow wireless internet now and can hardly get on Netflix anymore.  My router is a Cisco Linksys WRT160N (v1).  The router is old but it worked fine with my old cable modem.  I called Linksys support and they would not even troubleshoot me and instead suggested I buy their new $250 router.  Is there maybe a setting on my router that I need to change or is it truly "too old" to work with my new cable modem?  I feel like trying to get my old one back because there was nothing "wrong" with my internet before!  Please help.

I did connect the cable modem directly to my computer and the speed test was about 35 mbps download, 15 upload (we are on the preferred tier) so that's why I think it must be a communication problem with my wireless router.

I would first try a wired connection to the router and compare that to the 35/15 speedtest you got direct to the modem. If wired to router is slow, its probably a router setting or performance issue. If its fast wired, and slow wireless, then its probably something with wireless congestion. Not sure how that would change with a new modem. I will be able to help more once I know if its a wired or just wireless problem.

It shouldn't be too old. I would go into the router settings and do a factory reset, then after the router reboots, unplug the router and the modem, wait 2 minutes, plug the modem in, let all the lights come up, then plug the router in and see if your performance improves after that. The new modem should not be affecting wireless from the router at all, so it is an odd issue. If a wired connection from the router is up to speed and your wireless is still wonky after doing all that, then there must be a coincidental issue with the wireless on the router.

Don't forget too with the eMTA modem you need to push the little reset button on the back with a small pointed object when connecting a different device to it otherwise you won't be able to connect.

Wired connection to the router is fast - it tested at almost the same speed.  I did a reset and that did not help, so I gave up and got a new router.  Thank you for all your help.

What router did you get may I ask? Im a nerd so like to see what people are buying.

Also, my best guess is in the process of replacing the modem, the router needed to be rebooted, and when that happened, was either enough, last straw to break it, or it locked onto a wireless channel that was congested/full in your neighborhood. There comes a point in troubleshooting wireless that you have to ask yourself what your time is worth, glad you found a solution that worked for you.

So all is good with a new router?

I got a Netgear N900 (wndr4500v2).  (I was mad at Linksys for trying to upsell me rather than give me technical support.)  The speed is definitely faster than our old one.  The only problem I am having is Netflix will suddenly stop in the middle of a show and throw an error - something to the effect of 'netflix cannot play this show'.  I hit enter and it loads and plays until the next error.  In a 30 min show it might do it once or twice.  I am getting a range extender, so that the signal will be stronger and I can try it on the 5ghz band and see if that helps.
