It seems odd that Windows 8.1 wouldn't be able to connect, there aren't any compatibility issues that I'm aware of.  Are you getting any kind of error messages when connecting?

I'm just having intermittent connection problems and wondered since I upgraded to windows 8.1 if I needed to contact Cox my internet provider about the change. Would this cause netgear connectivity problems

There wouldn't be any need to contact us.  You should just be able to join your existing wireless network from the Windows connection manager and use the wireless password currently being used by the other devices on your network.

is it common to lose your wireless connection several times a day. My All in one computer is in the kitchen about 8 ft away from the computer, the wireless modem is in the bedroom, would that cause a problem.

Microwaves, cordless phones, and baby monitors are common sources of wifi interference as how they all use the same frequencies.  If you have any of these devices in your home I'd suggest trying to move them as far as way from the PC's/router as possible to minimize problems.

even though the router is in another room and my pc is the one closer to the microwave, this means I'd have to move my microwave in another room. I need my computer in the kitchen, or is it just the router that needs to be far away from the micro.

Ideally for maximum benefit neither the router or PC should be near the microwave to maximize reliability.

The firmware that's on your device now was actually sent just earlier this year I believe.  That mainly addressed some minor performance issue that had been identified.
