Netgear CG3000d becomes unresponsive, goes to sleep until factory reset?
Hello,
New to the forum, hello Coxworld!
Here is the email support request I just sent in:
I don’t want to go into specifics, but I would like to exchange my router for the same model, just another unit. Is this possible, I think we rent the router?
What happens is that the unit becomes unresponsive, but some Internet traffic still can go through the unit, if using the wired connection only. The wireless goes out completely.
What I have done to fix the issues is that I press the reset button on the back, holding it for 30 seconds to reset to the factory defaults. Then I configure the device and everything is good for about 3 weeks. Eventually, it will become unresponsive again. When I say unresponsive, I mean:
1) Cannot reach the unit via IP address anymore in a web browser.
2) Wireless signal is up, but if you connect through wireless, you do not get routed to the Internet, clients say, "Connected but limited access".
3) Cannot ping the device at the 192.168.0.1 address, but you can ping places on the Internet, like Google and 8.8.8.8.
All the while, corded Internet still works, but there is packet loss and you get kicked from any games or VPN you are on.
Thanks,
Dave

While your at it, you might want to ask to upgrade to the newer model, which is either the CG3000Dv2 or the CG4500BD. The CG3000Dv1 is known to have wireless problems.

OK Chris,
I am new here and I will go easy.
This has NOTHING to do with signal, so switching to 1,5,9, etc. will not help. The signal is actually 100% and strong, as I have tested it from within the same room as the router. Also add, I live in a signal family home with a large yard, so no, my neighbors are not close and there is no chance of crosstalk. No, I do not have other WiFi devices, and I am not running the microwave oven when I have problems. My cordless phone is a 900MHz, not a 2.4GHz.
The problem is that the wireless connection is fine, the traffic from the WiFI VLAN does not get passed to the WAN port on the router. This is internal to the router. How do I know? One wifi laptop can ping another wifi laptop, but cannot ping the gateway, and cannot ping the internet, or any corded PC's.
But, to prove my point, lets say I shutoff wireless altogether. I still have the problem that I cannot ping or web access my device, but I could yesterday, and everyday since my last factory reset 3 weeks ago. I know, if I go reset now, everything will be fine. However, I would like a router that I did not have to factory reset every 3 weeks? I have done this for several months now, so much that I saved my config file so I don't have to manually reconfig all the things I set within the router when this happens.
So, what I am asking, and I think this was answered, is that I can go to my local store and request that they exchange my unit, and while I am there, it looks like I can exchange for a better model, or at least an upgraded same-type model.
Thanks,
David

So,
I went to the local Cox store and exchanged my unit for another same model.
If you want the CG3000Dv2, you have to buy it for $130, they only rent the v1 models.
If you want the CG4500, that is also a purchase only option, for $150. Why not spend $20 more if you are going to buy in the first place?
The best news is that if I buy, your warranty is through the local store. So, if my CG4500 were to die, I have 2 years to bring it in and swap it at the store, no mailing it back. This is a huge plus if this new unit goes to sleep in 3 weeks.
