NAT - Strict to Open

Hi. I'm having issues (well, my son is), with XBOX live, where NAT is strict, and I cannot change to open. It used to work just fine, but then about 3 week we started having issues. Modem: Motorola SB6121. I've been on the XBox forums, and I'm current stuck on Step 4: "Turn on UPnP to refresh your NAT table" XBox is connected via Wifi. Thanks, Deborah

What router do you have?

NAT is Network Address Translation. It turns public IP's (68.1.2.3) to private IP's (192.168.0.2). So a strict NAT is when Xbox can talk to the internet, but the internet can't talk to the Xbox.

Thanks. Our Router is an AirPort Extreme Base Station.

Sorry, I don't have experience with Apple equipment. They don't have a web interface to use to configure them. Either the Airport has to have UPnP enabled or you have to set up port forwarding. Have you tried contacting Apple?

After a little digging, Apple uses NAT-PMP which is a older, but similar, protocol to UPnP. My guess is the game console isn't compatible with it. So you will have to forward the ports. See here for instructions if using Airport Utility 6 and above.

What's baffling is that it used to work, with the same router and the same modem. Therefore I believe the XBOX One is compatible.

Thanks for your help. I'll check out the instructions to forward the appropriate ports.
