I have not changed anything for the past 5 years and have been receiving emails from Cox twice already that my data usage has exceeded the limit. I did EVERYTHING I can to correct the problem by downloading the security software offered by Cox, replaced my old router and changed the password and still the data usage is way too high. I do not understand what the problem is.... I called the support desk several times and nothing was resolved. Between the whole family, we only use maybe 5-6 hours of internet, hardly no streaming on netflix, only download for 2 hours a day. That's always been the case when we use the internet at home for the past few years. What is the problem???

First thing I would try is logging into Netflix on your PC and change the Video Quality settings down to Medium and see if that helps. I know it's helped my data usage a bit.

Yes....I already did that with netflix account. And, this is the result after the lowering the video quality settings. Thanks!

Do you have any Apple devices in the home (iPhone, iPod or iPad) that connect to the Wifi??
I read something awhile back when someone had your same issue, and it seems their iPhone was the cause... when it would sync (charger plugged in with wifi on), it would be stuck in an endless loop of trying to sync data, thus causing their usage to spike.

Yes, I have 3 ipads but I have not connected to itunes for the past few months.... due to this reason. And, usually I turn off the wifi on all the devices all day long except when i need to use the wifi for approximately 2 hours a day.

Then I really don't know what else it could be, sorry. Hopefully someone else can chime in with some more ideas.

A data hog that I've found is the Amazon streaming service. According to what I've read at their help site, they always send out the highest stream your equipment can handle. You have no choice to opt for a lower stream. I found this when Amazon Prime added the HBO series to their list of shows for streaming.
I find that an Amazon stream uses at least 3x the amount of data as a Netflix stream. This has caused me to be very judicious with my Amazon streaming.

I find it interesting that my data usage for the time frame shown above matches identically with massive data in including the high of 16.34GB. Can this be explained by Cox?
