My cable modem resets itself when downloading.
My cable modem seems to be resetting itself whenever I'm downloading something. Oddly this usually doesn't happen when playing games online, only when downloading games from Steam or downloading large amounts of data.
I went to 192.168.100.1 and this is what it currently says:
Frequency | 843000000 Hz |
Signal To Noise Ratio | 36.5 dB |
Power Level | -0.4 dBmV The Downstream Power Level reading is a snapshot taken at the time this page was requested. Please Reload/Refresh this Page for a new reading |
Upstream | Value |
Channel ID | 2 |
Frequency | 29600000 Hz |
Power | 43.2 dBmV |
This is after it rebooted. I looked in the logs and found the following information for today:

Any assistance on this would be great. I tried calling Cox and the lady that I talked to insisted that it was a problem with my router and told me to power cycle the equipment and then everything would be fine. Well, it isn't, so now hopefully this forum can provide some insight.

It looks like what is happening is the modem is changing channels to try and gain access to additional capacity. During casual use this is a seamless process however you could see hesitation during streaming applications or in the worst case scenario a complete reboot when this happens. If you were to upgrade to a DOCSIS 3.0 modem it can bond multiple channels simultaneously both preventing this particular stuation from happening and giving you more consistent speeds on a regular basis.

Thank you very much for your quick response, Chris. I have a Motorola Surfboard SB5101 cable modem, which doesn't appear to be a DOCSIS 3.0 modem. Do you know if Cox be responsible for providing a DOCSIS 3.0 modem to replace my current one or am I on my own?
This problem only seemed to start happening about a week ago, so I don't know what changed.
Again, thank you very much for your quick response. It is greatly appreciated.

Check the different options at 192.168.100.1, see anything for a Factory reset? That should reset the remebered DS frequency. You might be stuck on a congested channel.

I did do a factory reset of the cable modem, but that didn't resolve the issue. I'm going to call Cox and see about them upgrading my cable modem to a DOCSIS 3.0.

Yea, if that didin't work, then I think having a technician have a look is a good idea. Could be anything from congestion (I hope not) to the modem starting to go (though that isn't very likly). Do you have another modem you can swap to test?
