Modem upgrade problems
Back around the year 2000 I got internet service and bought the modem from Cox rather than rent. A Motorola Surfboard modem. In October 2014 I decided to upgrade my modem for a new Doc3, since my speeds were getting slower and slower. I went to the Cox site to see about purchasing a new one and it informed me I was entitled to a free upgrade, which I didn't understand since it was my modem, not a rental, but I signed up for the upgrade since I needed it.
After receiving the new modem I got a notice that I had to return the old modem or pay
$125.00 for equipment charges. So I returned it figuring that was the deal, trade in the old modem I purchased from Cox for a new one and it would still be mine.
But now I'm seeing a modem rental charge on my statement. Viewing my statements prior to October shows no modem rental, as I owned the modem. But now I'm paying rent which is the last thing I wanted to do, and Cox took my old modem as well.
So it seems to me that Cox needs to give me my old modem back, drop the rental fees, or pay me the $125 they were going to charge me for not returning the modem I already paid for, as evidenced by a lack of rental charges prior to the exchange.

I agree. What modem did they send you? I didn't think Cox rented modems anymore, just gateways.

It's a Netgear CG3000D and they're charging me $6.99 a month for "WiFi Modem Rental". And the WiFi ** and has no range (internal antenna). I had to plug my wireless router into it and use that as an access point.

Ick. I doubt Cox paid more then 30-40$ for the gateway. Probably the reason they are pushed so much. What were you thinking of getting instead of the CG3000D? The Motorola SB6141 is one choice, and is very popular. The SB6183 is newer and a bit more capable, but I have seen some areas have problems with it bonding on all channels.

I hadn't thought about it yet, but the Motorola SB6141 might be a good choice, thanks!

Good news! I just talked to the Billing department at Cox and they are going to drop the rental fee, and I keep the new WiFi modem. So everything actually worked out OK. They keep the old modem, I get the new one at no charge, and no rental fees. So I guess I'll just stick with the Netgear for now since the price is right. The woman mentioned my being "a good customer for 12 years" so that may have played into it, they didn't want to tick me off with an additional 6.99 a month rental fee.
