Modem Swap and Opinion questions

First, I was reading some forum posts and I saw something about having to pay to swap the modem? We currently have premier plus and are looking, after some issues with the current one being out of date which we think is causing our internet issues, to upgrade our modem to a Zoom 5341J. I was hoping to come here to get opinions, but now I'm wondering if this charge is a real thing?

The modem you have is more than sufficient for the service you're currently subscribed to.  There's not need to change it out at this time.

Not true according to tech support, plus that doesn't answer either one of my questions.

That's strange, I currently show you as having one of the modems that is eligible for Ultimate Tier service and therefore not obsolete.  There would be no need for you to swap the modem on that basis.  The signals do appear to show signs of trouble which could be a signal or possibly a modem issue.  I'd suggest checking to see if there are any cable splitters you could try bypassing first to see if there is improvement.

I would listen to Chris over a Tier 1 support agent. Some of them can be...less then knowledgable. But if you wish to buy another modem from them (it wouldnt be a swap since you can only swap leased equipment) here is a list of other Cox compatible modems.

But see for yourself. Basically the modem can support up to Ultimate except in the fallowing markets

  • Baton Rouge
  • Gulf Coast
  • Hampton Roads
  • New Orleans
  • Orange County
  • Palos Verdes
  • San Diego

Datasheet

Downstream
Up to 343 Mbps (8 channels)
Up to 43 (single channel)

Upstream
Up to 123 Mbps (4 channels)
Up to 31 Mbps (single channel)

We wound up having to schedule a service call through the phones after we determined there is absolutely no way the problem is anywhere in our house. The Modem was changed by choice, as it supported a much higher throughput. After fighting with it, and replacing the cable between the modem and the outside box with commercial grade cable, the service call we wound up scheduling HAS to be something outside of our control

Hi Butler,

I agree with ChrisL -- the modem stats do look a little out of spec. I'm glad you have a service call scheduled for today! Please let us know how it goes and if you see an improvement in your internet connectivity and speeds in the next day or so.

I upgraded my modem. I owned my old modem and purchased a new one on my own.  Called Cox who walked me through activating it and there was no charge.
