Modem Continually Resetting When Downloading
Hello, this issue has been going on for almost a week now and after trying to solve it myself I would appreciate some help. Whenever I am downloading a large file, regardless of source, my modem will occasionally reset. However this is not immediately indicated on the model, which takes as long as a minute to reset itself. My Internet will then work correctly but the issue will repeat, often 5-10 minutes apart but sometimes as few as 1 minute apart.
I have Premier Internet with 4 devices connected via a Belkin N600 Wireless Router. I previously had a different Belkin model but we recently upgraded (today) for reasons not connected to this issue.
My personal PC has a wired connection to the router, all other devices are wireless. I have experienced this issue with both wired and wireless connections and at all hours of the day and night.
There have also been extremely isolated instances where this happened and I was watching streaming content. However this is very typical behavior for me and from what I can tell does not often "cause" this reset to happen.
The modem is under a year old to my knowledge and has not suffered any damage that I am aware of. I would really appreciate any assistance in diagnosing and addressing this issue.

Find the ip address of your modem and post a screen shot of the power levels.

I am seeing the same thing I think... When online gaming or during a skype session, everything stops. Sometimes takes up to 5 minutes to get back. WIndows7 troubleshooter says can't find DNS server. COnnect to the Internet, but apparently DNS servers are messing up. Only started happening in the last 2-3 weeks. Happens to me about every 1/2hr now. I got an Email saying my speed was upgraded, maybe something to do with that...

Power level is 40 dBmV. It also says the it has failed to establish the time of day but I don't seem to be able to interact with that.

I'm getting similar drops in the San Diego area. I have to release and renew my connection or reset my modem. It has been going on for little over a week.

@Steven8R
I'd say it's more likely there is a connection issue which windows is seeing as a general DNS failure. I'd suggest first trying a wired connection and seeing if you continue to have the same problems.

Your modem doesn't look very healthy when I check the status from this end. The downstream signal levels are just barely there which may explain some of your reported issues. Are there any extra splitters on the cable lines you can try bypassing? I'd also suggest checking all the fittings along the cable lines to ensure they're still hand tight as well as check for any damaged lines.

No splitters and I do have a wired connection. All the fittings are as tight as I can make them. Is it possible this modem is just at the end of its life cycle?

The modem you have has been end of life for several years now although I wouldn't necessarily determine it to be faulty on that alone. It is however commonly a modem issue when the problem can be duplicated by putting the connection under load. If you were considering an upgrade to a DOCSIS 3.0 modem this may be a good time to try that. We could also look into setting up a service call to troubleshoot further if you prefer.

I'd be open to a new modem, is that something I can get at a Cox store?
