What is the difference between the wireless connection with the one that says 5g as opposed to the one that doesn't

Do you mean 5 GHz WiFi?  If so, WiFi works on 2 frequency bands, 2.4 GHz and 5GHz.  If your hardware supports it, 5GHz may give you better performance as there is less interference at those frequencys.  Almost everything, cordless phones, baby monitors, garage door openers, etc, in addition to neighbor's WiFi, work in the 2.4 GHz band creating lots of interference.  I use the 5GHz band wherever possible.

If you are talking about 5g WiFi, that's marketing for 802.11ac standard.  It's a high speed WiFi standard that runs in the 5GHz band only.  It's capable of speeds way in excess of a gigabit, more than twice the speed of 802.11n.
