Minibox with WinTV 7 tuner and software not working

Prior to Cox's conversion to the minibox I was able to watch cable television on my computer with my Hauppauge WinTv tuner connected via USB and the WinTV software.

I have now rented a minibox and connected it to the Hauupauge tuner unit.  It's reading it, but I'm only getting static for every station.

The minibox is set to channel 3 and I tried it with channel 4, but still just static.  How can I get this to work?  :/

Hi Vespcuh,

Does your Hauppauge WinTV Tuner use a CableCARD?

No, it's an external tuner unit that's about 3 inches by 1.5 inches and looks a little like a thumb drive.

The television cable line goes from the wall to the minibox, then another cable goes from the minibox to the tuner unit then the tuner unit is connect via USB port to my computer.

Hi Vespcuh,

I've assisted folks using Hauppauge TV Tuners in the past, but they worked with Windows Media Center and a CableCARD. I don't think your Hauppauge TV Tuner is going to work with the mini box. The information in the link you provided indicates that the tuner model you have is capable of receiving over-the-air HD signals. My guess is that you'll need to connect your device to a portable digital TV antenna rather than a mini box.

Does your WinTV have an analog tuner or just digital ATSC & ClearQAM tuners?  It it does have an analog tuner, make sure both your minibox is set for ch 3 output & the WinTV tuned to ch 3.  You will then change channels with the minibox remote.  If your WinTV only has digital tuners, you are out of luck, it won't work with Cox's new encrypted digital signals.

Becky, the link provided says the device supports NTSC which is analog.  If that is true, it might work over coax from the minibox as long as both devices are on the same channel.

Hi Allen, you're right! I overlooked that option.

@Vespcuh, please let us know if Allen's suggestion works for you.

OMG.  You guys are GENIUSES!!  I have been trying to figure this out for days before I posted on here.  Per your suggestion, I set the minibox to channel 3, the WinTV to channel 3 and use the remote to change the stations.

IT WORKS!  BRILLIANT!!!

THANK YOU SO SO SO SO SO SO SO MUCH!!!!

I WOULD SEND YOU A FRUIT BASKED BUT I DON'T KNOW WHERE YOU ARE.

I just set up my Win 7 Media Center with the minibox, IR link and everything, and I'm watching TV and recording shows on my computer just like I have always been. Media Center controls the minibox after I programmed the remote functions. Now I am looking for a compatible digital tuner with HDMI input. Wish me luck!
