MiniBox with Hauppage WinTV Tuner card in my PC
Hi
I subscribe to Cox digital cable with HD. I have two TVs with cable boxes but I also have a Hauppage WinTV HVR 1600 in my PC as well. I run the cable to my PC without a cable box. I don't really need it. I use this setup to record the channels that I can receive without a cable box. This has been working well for years.
I would like to understand how this pending change (requiring me to use the MiniBox) will affect my recordings.
Currently, this TV tuner see two sets of channels:
Set1: Approx 90 Analog channels
Set2: Approx 30 OTA HD channels (Clear QAM).
If I understand this correctly, I will no longer see the analog channels without this box yes? Will I still see the OTA/Clear Qam channels without the box or do I need the box for those too?
Thank you
-Steve

You can get a PC tuner that is cablecard ready and instead of getting a mini box for the PC, you can get a cable card. Two devices to look at is Ceton InfiniTV and HomeRunHD. We don't support or trouble shoot the tuner itself but we will help with pairing the cable card and making sure the channels you are in billing for are authorized.

You will need a mini box and connect it to ATSC/QAM Digital input. Then the mini box will be set to what ever channel you want to watch, and the tuner will need to be set to channel 3/4 (depending). All channels will be encrypted AND digital.
This may hinder your ability to schedule recordings because the tuner inside the card will no longer be in control of the channel watched. Also, the firmware on the minibox will have to be updated to disable encryption on the minibox output.

Are there other alternatives than this minibox? I'd rather buy one than keep renting.

Yes, you could rent a advanced receiver or a HD receiver.
Not possible. They aren't for sale.

Wow, not good.
I hope Cox understands that the trend in the market these days is cord cutting. There are more and more TV options and a change like this just prompts people like me to cut the cord too. I've been considering it for some time and now it looks like I have another very good reason.

Ahh yes that would work.
I don't really want to change my card but I will look at it. Currently I use TitanTV with my card and browse TV shows with one touch record. Very nice feature. If I can find a similar setup with the newer card that would be a good thing.
Thanks for the recommendations.

Any idea what the date for the cutover is?
My TV is still working without the minbox installed.
Thanks

I see thanks.
I have two inputs on my TV card. 'Analog Cable TV' and 'Clear QAM Digital TV' (OTA). Both of these are connected currently, directly from my wall outlet and I receive channels on both.
Which one am I supposed to connect to the Minibox? Is Cox going to scramble both of these or just one? Will the OTA channels be affected too?

With a minibox your only choice is analog ... The coax output of the minibox is analog on channel 3 or 4 depending on the switch on the back of the box. You will have to set the tuner of the card to that channel & switch channels using the minibox remote.
yes, all channels will be encrypted, ClearQAM too.

Any idea what the minibox remote device code would be for a Hauppage WinTV HVR 1600 TV tuner?
I've scanned for it using the remote setup instructions and now I've tried looking it up in the code guide but no such luck.

It appears my area has cutover to the new format.
Note that my Analog tuner needs to be connected to the MiniBox to receive ch 2-96, as expected.
However, connecting from the wall to the Clear QAM input on my card, I can still see the clear QAM channels, in HD...yes! I can work with this.
When recording an Analog channel, the Minibox needs to be set to the TV channel that the program airs on and my Analog tuner needs to be set to ch3.
When recording a Clear QAM channel, my tuner needs to be set the the TV channel that the program airs on.
All works well.
Thanks!
