MINI Box Nightmare Installation

Whoever packaged the Instructions should be fired.

I spent over an hour on the phone with tech support REP, and could not get Setup to complete successfully.

First off, the instructions say to start by reading directions on back of Mini Box. Problem is, there are no instructions on

the back of Mini Box. Secondly, if you are reading the Instructions on the back of the Remote, to program the remote, the instructions do not mention anything about entering the one digit code for popular TV, or trying all of the 4 digit codes for the TV model.. The paper enclosure has it, but why put incorrect instructions on the remote ?

After everything failed on two TVs, I was told I would have to pay for a service call, to which I said &^&*^&^$ that !

Now for the best part. An hour or so after the Tech could not get the Setup to complete, and scheduled a service call, I went back to the TVs, turned them on, and Voila the remotes were working. But one TV I have to use the power button on the old remote to turn on/off as the power button on the new remote does not work.

What an abortion this roll out has been !

Between myself and for friends, I've installed a half dozen miniboxes.  None of them had instructions pointing to the back of the minibox.  What manual did Cox include with your minibox?  I don't remember, there may have been basic instructions in the cardboard box the minibox came in but nothing on the minibox itself.

The instructions on the remote are very basic.  If you need more details RTFM.

Of the boxes I've installed, 1 was on an old analog TV, 4 using hdmi into flatscreens and 1 into a home theater AVR using hdmi.  Total time spent was less than 1/2 hour and all are working as they should.  In no way is the minibox great and the remote may or may not word with specific brands of TV.  I personally don't like the minibox but installation wasn't an issue.  My issues are the way they function.

What problems did you encounter?  Maybe if you posted you issues here someone could have helped.

ksiemb,

Your feedback is important to us. Can you post a picture of the instructions in question? I'd like to review this for you and pass along your experience to the appropriate leadership team.

Looks like the remotes are the issue. I had no problems with installing and setup of the mini-boxes. With good cable, they setup themselves. The URC-2220 remote for the mini-box is inadequately designed for all the analog TV customer Cox wants to transition to digital. They do not have all the Codes that other Cox remotes have. There are only 12 of the 50+ codes in the remote for a popular brand like Magnavox. So go figure how a lot of these TVs are going to work off of such an inadequately supported remote. What I found is the following: The URC-2220 for the Mini Box doesn't have many of the codes for popular brands found in other Cox remotes (40 codes missing for Magnavox and none of the 3 codes listed in other Cox remotes for Admiral). There are even remote codes listed in 2220 manual that are not recognized by the remote itself. The codes listed in the manual but not recognized by the remote are 1080, 1561, 1678, 3492 and 3683. Code Search (Method B) doesn't even go through all 147 codes listed in the manual. I counted it going through about 60. I had to do all 147 manually to find out that no codes work for 2 of the 3 TVs I got mini-boxes for. Is there a Cox Solution to this? This is becoming an irritant to me and I'm see other customers as well.

Hi Mini-boxer,

What brands are the TVs that you need remote codes for?

I have an Magnavox Flat Screen HDTV built in July 2005 and an Admiral TV/VCR Combo Model # GOJ 12321. FOR THE MAGNAVOX: The 2220 remote for the mini box only has the following 12 codes for Magnavox (and Philips the parent company that could have made the set): 0017 0051 0171 0690 1365 1394 1454 1755 1867 1963 2597 3623 None of the above code worked for the set upon multiple tries with multiple remotes. Other Cox Remotes have the following 41 additional codes listed for Magnavox/Philips that might work with this set: 1866 1990 1455 1198 2372 3708 0054 1913 1931 2902 0802 1904 1744 1525 0706 0024 0096 0186 0187 0020 0179 0036 0230 0028 0030 0386 1254 0039 0409 1483 0000 0018 0019 0021 0027 0029 0049 0052 0065 0149 1154 FOR THE ADMIRAL: The 2220 remote has no codes for Admiral (a popular name brand at one time in the USA-the 2220 does list a lot of brands that no one has ever heard of (maybe in China they have those brands)) Other Cox Remotes list 3 codes for the Admiral: 0463 0093 0179 Comment: The remote is the interface to the human that deals with your product. More care and attention should be made to the design of the remote than any other thing Cox develops in order to make ALL customers happy. Especially those that are now forced to switch from the convenience of having analog TV sets plug and play (an advantage Cox has had over all it competitors) to digital. Codes from the past must be included. And designing the remote should be the easiest thing any Cable provider has to develop. Fixing a problem with the remote is cheap in comparison to other pieces in the network. Having it as it is will only make customers run to your competitors (not that the competitors don't have the same problems-but most customers don't know that). Shoving this issue under the rug is not an option for employees that mediate this forum. This issue is out there and must be handled with care, honesty, and with the promise of future resolution. REMEMBER: Fixing this remote's problems will be cheap and it will make more customers happy than anything else Cox does (except keeping monthly rates under control). Now get the job done. Pardon me, but I mispoke. When I referred to the Instructions on the back of the Mini Box, it should have been "the Mini Box Remote."

Reading those instructions to program the remote, versus the instructions on the enclosed paper instructions differ. The paper instructions worked,  Even tech could not get the remote programmed. I had to eventually do it with the paper instructions.

And, scru U Mr know it all. What gives you the right to be so all knowing and condescending ? I don't care how many boxes you installed. And I suppose you have an answer for always having to use the Zoom button every time you change channels, so that things don't run off the screen !

Do the instructions on back of the remote say anything about entering the 4 digit codes or the single code for most popular brands of TV ?  Mine didn't !
