Mini box channel control with Tivo Series 2

I have three Tivo units connected to Cox.  Two use cablecards, so I do not expect problems with digital conversion.  However the third Tivo is an older Series 2 that does not have a cable card.  Can the mini box be controlled by the Tivo IR control cable connected to the Series 2?

I'm not familiar with the Tivo's capabilities however if it helps to understand the problem better the mini box will be the device that has to do the channel tuning.  Tivo support may be able to answer more specific questions as to if/how the Tivo can remote control other devices.

Same problem here.  I am planning to go through the lengthy process of trying to set up with every different cable box manufacturer that TiVo gives a choice of.  This is not really cox's fault, per se, but their switch to all digital likely makes the TiVo Series 2 box useless.

Hi Bonenz.  The mfgr is Evolution Digital.  The Tivo to Mini connection failed with an IR cable.  I have ordered the IR Emitter to set up the Tivo to Mini connection (it will be another week or so).  I have used the IR cable in the past with a Comcast DTR with no problems (although it was a different cable, but I assume they are wired the same). I am wiring as follows:  wall cable connect -to- Mini cable in;  Mini cable out -to- splitter;   splitter -to- TV cable in;   splitter -to- Tivo Series 2 cable in;   Tivo Series 2 R,W,Y video out  -to- TV R,W,Y video in;   Tivo IR jack (with IR Emitter cable) -to- Mini (emitter positioned over Mini front IR sensor)   All this is to allow:  1. Normal use of the Mini & remote when the TV is on channel 3.  2. Tivo display and control of the Mini with the Tivo remote when the TV is on Video 1.  3. Mini use will be limited to normal OR Tivo.   Jim

Hey Jim,

Have you figured out what IR codes you need to use to get Tivo to be able to control the Cox MiniBox?  I've checked Tivo's site, Evolution's site, Cox's site and have yet to find anything.  Are you just planning on brute forcing it to figure out which code works?

For those of you that are just tuning in:

Back in the day (early to mid 90's), some cable companies required you to use their cable boxes to descramble content.  To work around this issue, early Tivos shipped with an IR blaster (a little wired IR LED that could be connected to your Tivo).  The IR blaster would be placed in front of the IR Receiver on your cable box and would let Tivo be able to simulate a channel change code whenever it needed to change channels.

Now, Cox is requiring a MiniBox to convert their all-digital content to analog content that our older TVs (and Tivo) can receive.  We ought to be able to use Tivo's IR Blaster (as Jim mentions) to control the Cox MiniBox (i.e., act as though there's a user changing channels using the MiniBox remote).

The ONLY thing missing is the code to plugin into Tivo to configure it to send codes that MiniBox understands.  If anyone has this please post.  Alternatively, if the MiniBox is similar to some other TV (e.g. a Samsung or LG TV) that would be useful to know too.

Actually, I did stumble upon this.  Some useful tidbits in here: http://tivoproduction.force.com/Support/apex/SupportPortalArticleViewPage?artURL=/Support/articles/FAQ/IR-Serial-Channel-Changing

I would be very interested in this information as well. I got my cox mini-boxes and have been trying to get it to work with my Series 2 TIVO, but no luck yet. Hope someone solves this!

I am having the same problem.  I have contacted Tivo tech support by phone.  They did not have any other codes other than the two Evolution codes given in the guided set-up process.  They told me the box type was new enough that it may have not been registered with Tivo's cable box list yet.  I put in a request for Tivo to identify a code for this box.  They are supposed to reply to me by email.  As another option, I was considering trying this cord I found online: an IR blaster direct connect adapter cable http://www.ebay.com/itm/Tivo-IR-Blaster-Direct-Connect-Adapter-Cable-/320588083796.  I am wondering if this would work.  Maybe that is what you are referring to by the "IR emitter" that you ordered?

i also have a series 2 and have spent countless hours trying to get the devices to sync with the ir blasters.

i just got off the phone with tivo and was told they are incompatible.

i have a call in to evolution to see if they have a suggestion and if it works i will post the method here.

I'm also in this same boat.  Has anyone come up with a solution/workaroud yet?

I'm having the same problem with my tivo series 2 and the new cox mini box.

Everything works fine but the ir blasters from the tivo will not change the channels on the mini cable box from cox.

I called tivo and they just tried to sell me a new roamio tivo that uses cable cards.  That's great but instead of having to spend more money I'd like to get this series 2 to work with this cox digital box.  Not sure why its so hard?

I been sitting for hours going thru the tivo settings selecting over 30-40 different manufacturers brands of cable boxes including evolution but none of them will change channels on the cox box.  Maybe something that needs to be fixed on tivo's end most likely.

This cox mini box is very new.  If someone has any news please post and I will keep updating on what I hear from tivo on this.

I've wondered if there has been any sort of systematic, crowd-sourced attempt to brute-force the code. If we assume the one of the Evolution codes work, I think there's less than 1,000 of them (!270 codes x 3 versions each)

I went through dozens of evolution codes manually with the series 2 tivo box.  Located in TiVo Central > access Settings & Messages > Settings > Channels > Channel  Changing, 'Advanced Setup'.

I spend another 2 plus hours tonight going through Evolution codes like 10014 a, b and c and keep searching but nothing.

Not sure why this cable box will not respond to anything when it comes to changing channels.

My particular cox mini box is an evolution model number DMS2344UHDS

I'm in touch with tivo tech support so I hope they figure it out sooner or later.

Also any of you folks with the same issue please contact tivo support and keep contacting them.

The more people we have bugging them with this issue the better the chances are they will look into it and try to get it resolved.

Go here:

https://support.tivo.com/ContactTiVoSupport

I was on chat with them and the rep was kind enough to send me a free new set of IR wires to see if that fixes it.  I doubt it that we all just have bad IR wires with the same setup tivo box and cox mini cable box.  But at least its a step to eliminate that the wire is the culprit.

So as I thought, the new IR wires came in and same issue.  Still wont change channels.

I knew it wasn't the wire that was bad.

Hi Everyone,

I'm sorry that the transition to the mini box hasn't gone smoothly for TiVo Series 2 owners. The suggestion to submit requests to TiVo to get the Evolution DTA's on their list of cable boxes is definitely a good one.

We recently developed a big button, universal remote that works with the Cox mini box. The programming instructions for this remote include the setup code 0005 for the Evolution mini box. I also heard that the code 0991 worked on some devices. Perhaps one of these codes might work for the TiVo IR blaster?
