Low Download Speed

We have found that we are getting much slower speeds than our package should be providing.  We should be getting 100 Mbps but are actually getting 10 - 30 Mbps.  I have attempted to resolve Tuesday and Thursday with online tech support.  There was improvement after tech support reset the line on Tuesday but that only got us up to 30 Mbps.  Today (Thursday) tech support told me that they are seeing 100 Mbps at our modem but when I ran speed tests using Cox's and Ookla's speed tests I was getting 10 Mbps.  At that point tech support stopped communicating in the chat so now we're stuck with no suggestions.

We have a Netgear CG3000D.  Is that cable modem not capable of sending out even 100 Mbps?  If so I'd appreciate a suggestion or at least an opportunity to make an appointment to get someone here to figure it out.

By chance have you tried testing from different devices to see if the results are consistent?  Also, have you tried testing any wired connections to see if you get different results?

We have tested using laptops and iPad with some tests near the cable modem/router with consistent results (< 30 Mbps).

We realized a wired connection would be an interesting test and will post those results here shortly.

Got 100 Mbps with wired connection.  Immediately did wireless test and got 40 Mbps.  The laptop was sitting a few inches from the modem/router for the wireless test.

I realize there will be a drop between wired and wireless but should it be that much?  Does Cox offer a cable modem/router that does a better job of utilizing the wired input for wireless?

Based on the Gateway there it would be limited to the wired connection along with any limits on the wireless card in the device connecting and interference if you are trying to get everything out of your wireless going with a 802.11ac router rather then 802.11n will help but your still dealing with more factors to slow it down over wired.

I seem to be in the same boat, I am paying for 150 Mbps but am only receiving -exactly- 30 Mbps.

As far as I can tell, wireless seems to be maxed out at ~40 Mbps.  Selecting 802.11n did help increase wireless to ~40 Mbps.  Increasing the speed to the modem has no effect.   We're going to check with someone we know that is knowledgeable about this.   I'll post here since there seems to be others that are discovering the same issue.

I am having the same problem. Should be getting up to 100Mbps. Getting 30 Mbps consistently.

I also have a similar problem.  I get 100 mbps in the morning, and late at night.  After work, around 6pm until midnight, it drops to 5-15.  I really doubt network congestion can cause a 100 mbps line slow down to 5.  Calling hasn't helped at all, a tech has come out three times.  The last time he said it was the line coming into my apartment, but I doubt that since I can get the advertised speeds, sometimes.  It's frustrating.

Once the modem reboots give it another try however signal levels do look very poor so I think you may still need a tech to come out.

What is the best number to call to quickly and easily schedule a tech support visit?

Our "expert" suggested the following:

  1. No nearby electronic devices to the modem/router.
  2. The more devices using the wifi network the slower it will get.
  3. The selected security mode makes a difference.  Two of the modes are spec'd to be no faster than 54 Mbps.
Removing other electronic devices from the immediate area of the modem/router did help.  Near the router the wifi speed is now ~45 Mbps.
We're going to try some powerline adapters to allow devices to have a wired connection (the location of the modem/router recommended by Cox's tech support makes any wired connections impossible).  Will post results here.

Clococo, With it changing that drastically through the day it would sound like there likely some type of line damage maybe along with other factors. Is the line buried coming into the home or coming off a pole/aerial drop?

In our case, it is buried coming into the house.  The "boxes" on the outside of the house have replaced a couple of times because of ongoing issues with internet over the last 15 years.  When those boxes get replaced, there seems to be temporary improvement.  The external resetting that has occurred also temporarily improves the signal.

My speed is really slow right now. I ran a test using Cox's tester and got 1.09Mbps download and .41Mbps upload speed. Any suggestions?

Hi Kimball,

We can look into that for you, we'll need the account information to do some troubleshooting.  Can you please email us at cox.help@cox.com and include the name and address listed on the account?  We'll get to the bottom of the speed issue that you're having.
