Lately I have problems getting onto the internet. This happens several times during the day. It only happens when I am getting onto the internet, not while I am on the net. Nothing has changed(hardware, software, disconnected cables etc) I use a Linksys cable modem. To get on the internet I have to unplug the modem and then plug it back in. After a few seconds my modem indicates I can connect to the internet. Why am I having these problems recently?
PS: I am still using Windows XP.

Whats the model number of your modem? Is your computer connected directly to it?
Before you unplug it to "fix it" do the lights look normal?
When you can't get online, what exactly is the message?

So its either resetting, or losing the downstream. It should also be noted thats a pretty old modem. Atleast 6 years old. What are it's signal levels? You should find them at the website 192.168.100.1 and should look like this?

What are the rest of your signal levels? Should be a upstream section. Your SNR is low, but your power level is high. That usually means either bad cable wiring, or a amplifier that has gone bad. Whats the cabling like from the street to the modem? The DS SNR is probably causing the modem to T4 and reboot.

The cable is underground from the box next to the sidewalk to the box attached to the side of the house.

Your Upstream power is a little on the high side too, in combination make me think this is a issue with splitters and a amp in the wrong place. Do you know how the cabling gets from the side of the house to the modem?
In short, you have a signal issue. If all this is greek, probably best just to have a technician to your house, just be warned of charges if its any of your wiring inside the house that needs to be replaced.
