Issues with a Netgear Router

I am currently with no internet.

I had an older Netgear N600 router, and was having major speed issues (getting 8-10 Mbps, instead of 50 Mbps that I am supposed to get.

http://www.netgear.com/home/products/networking/wifi-routers/WNDR3400.aspx

I went to Cox store, swapped the modem, but it did not help.

I went back there and picked up a newer Netgear N600 router, here:

http://www.netgear.com/home/products/networking/wifi-routers/wndr3700.aspx

After spending hours and hours with Cox, and Netgear reps from India call center, it was determined that the new router is faulty.

However, when I put the "old" router back, none of my devices recognizes the password for wi-fi any more. Going to routerlogin.net and making sure the password is the same, did not help. So I have no internet for now.

Any ideas on what's going on? Any help with the new or the old router is highly appreciated!

I think you have modems, routers and gateways confused. A WNDR3400 is a router, and I don't think Cox sells them, or any router. They only sell/rent gateways, which are modem/router combos. If you connect a router to a gateway, it won't work without special configuration. You either need a stand alone modem and router, a gateway, or a gateway with a router hooked up to in in AP mode.

What model modem and router do you have now?

I appreciate your reply. I don't have them confused. I picked up the Netgear N600 at a Cox Solutions store in Fairfax, VA. They certainly sell them there, I got it from there. They had a bunch of routers in store.

I certainly know the difference between routers and modem. I have the Cisco docsis 3.0 modem (can't remember the model number, as I am at work now).

So now, I have the two Netgear N600 routers home (neither of them working) and the Cisco modem.

I stand corrected. Apologies. I thought you had a WNDR3400(N600 router) and might have given you a C3700(N600 gateway). I knew Cox once sold routers at retail, but I hadn't seen any at my local store for several years. Maybe it depends where you live.

As for your problem, I think you have a couple. A speed issue and a wireless configuration issue. To isolate the speed issue, what speed do you get connected to the modem(Cisco DPC-3010?). If fast, what do you get wired to old router? As for the wireless configuration issue, have you tried changing yous password? Or, is more convenience, try first deleting the wireless profile for your network in your device and reconnect to your network.

I fixed it! I decided to get back to the new router. I tried many tricks I looked up online. The one that worked was resetting the router completely to factory default settings, by inserting a paper clip inside the little hole on the back of the Netgear router, powering it off, having Cox reset my Cisco Modem. Then powering on everything, connecting the router via ethernet directly to my laptop, bypassing the Netgear Genie app completely, and getting into the routerlogin.net site 192.168.1.1 to set it up from there. Everything works great now (keeping fingers crossed)

When you reconnected your "old" router, did you reset your modem?  If not, your modem still has the MAC address of the other router in its config file.  Just unplug the power for 15 seconds and it'll resync with the router.

As for your wireless clients, you may just need to reestablish the connections.  You can run an arp -a in the command lines to review which router they're looking for...in reference to its MAC address.

That's great!  Thanks for posting your fix because that will help others with the same issue.  Most people, even after the fix, leave the post open and unresolved.
