Is there something wrong with the Cisco Explorer 8642HDC Firmware

I recently had the trusty Scientific Altanta DVR replaced after a Service Call about being unable to view ON Demand movies.

The new Cisco box worked ok for  few days until we tried to view a recorded program. It stuttered and was generally unwatchable on the playback. That started to occur watching live TV too. Was this a bad disk? Another symptom was that viewing the guide shrank the live TV picture as expected, but when exiting from the Guide, the picture remained small in the upper right quadrant. Changing channels didn't reset. A complete reset by unplugging power was the only way to get it back. The continued playback stutter made me visit a store for an exchange.

The second unit seemed OK, but suffered from the same stuuer playback. I left the stuttering program on what I thought might be bad disk, and subsequent recorded shows seemed fine. This morning I noticed the program playing through this box, was about 5 seconds delayed from the same program playing through a non-DVR box, where previously they had been in perfect sync. I clicked the guide, and the same shrunken picture state happened.

I have been searching issues with the Cisco boxes and the stutter is mentioned a lot.

Is the box subject to overheating - it is in a cabinet with glass doors.

Can I get a Scientific Atlanta DVR Cable box. I am seriously considering a move to satellite

Are you experiencing this issue with both boxes or just one in particular?

I had huge issues that were resolved after cox checked  every home that was connected to the same node on my street.  All the homes were getting bleed through radio signals.  After the technicians fixed all the problems I hav only had to reboot my box twice in well over 2 months.  I will say this was a HUGE PITA button them to figure out but since the other homes and mine have been rewired I have had very few if any problems.

I have the same Cisco DVR. I had the whole home system installed about 4 months ago and it has been a non-stop pain in the behind. We've had at least 4 repair calls due to tiling, poor communication between "host" and "drone" boxes, internal wiring, external wiring, hardware changes, etc.  Each visit from a tech brings criticisms of the lack of knowledge of the previous tech. Some give their "mobile" number to call if the problem isn't resolved.  But no one ever answers the phone at any of those numbers. When I call for tech support by phone, they usually just reset the box remotely. Once or twice that has taken care of the issue. But not this time.

Last night in the wee hours, the main box (which I watch to most because it's convenient) started getting glitchy. It wouldn't reach the remote control. I replace the batteries and the problem wasn't solved.  I clicked onto the "COX" button and went into SETTINGS and looked around for any setting which might have been amiss..... no problem there. But suddenly noticed my DVR screen has switched from the channel setting to the time.  Also, the off/on button would only turn on the DVR and suddenly not the TV.  I checked the TV's SETTING, nothing wrong there.  I turned off the DVR and that the LED time would not turn off.  (I never keep the time setting on - I have my alarm clock above the box).  I was finally able to get both DVR and TV on to watch a little late night TV and turned it off, thinking I'd just have to live with the lighted screen - when it suddenly switched off.

I thought it was all fixed, miraculously until this afternoon when I turned pushed the remote on/off button and the TV would not turn on.  Not even manually.  I pulled the plugs and did a reboot.... and the DVR screen froze on fn9.  Now the DVR in my Family Room won't work either - because it is a "drone".  It worked earlier when my husband had lunch and watched the news.  Now it too is frozen.

I called tech support and they said they can't even see a signal for those DVRs.

So tomorrow another service call. For which I'll be damned if I'm going to pay yet again. And I will not pay for services not rendered. I've been a Cox customer for nearly 20 years and all was well till CIsco came out with these new boxes. They're the worst. I'm actually considering bailing for another company.  My sister has had great luck with a dish company.  Perhaps it's time to go.
