Is there a solution to Windows 8 limited connections

Does anyone have a workaround for the frustrating problem of Windows 8 suddenly showing a "limited connection" for wireless connections.

Googling the problem shows there are plenty of people experiencing the same thing.

I'll be working away on my laptop and suddenly none of the pages will open or the streaming audio will stop. I'll look in the status bar and see a yellow exclamation point over the wireless indicator. Clicking on that brings up the list of connections and mine will say "Limited."  Simply disconnecting and reconnecting often takes care of the problem.

But, I use Skype for business calls and it is embarrassing to have a call dropped in the middle of a conversation because the internet connection is suddenly "Limited." What's "limited" about it, I don't know because Internet connectivity is non-existent.

The most often suggested "fix" is to make sure the network adapter driver is up to date, and it is.

Has anyone found a true solution?

It seems like Microsoft insists on introducing a dud of an operating system every five to six years, starting with Windows ME, and Windows 8 is just the latest failed iteration. Makes me wish I could play Whack-A-Mole using Microsoft engineers.

Are you able to try a wired connection to see if you continue to experiencing the same issues?

Probably a issue with the wireless security.

1. What kind of router do you have?

2. When you lose the wireless on one laptop, does it disconnect other wireless to?

3. Are you using Windows wireless or some other kind of client?

4. Do you have any VPN or software for your business side of things?

5. Do you know what kind of security the wireless uses? WEP, WPA, WPA2?

Thanks Chris. I'll try to find a long Ethernet cord and see if a manual connection results in the same limited connections.

Hi Triken,

The router shouldn't matter because I get limited connections in every hotel room and restaurant I visit while traveling, as well as at home and in the office.

When the Windows 8 machine goes down, the Windows 7 machines in our house still have Internet connections.

As far as I know, I am using Windows wireless. Device manager says it uses a Intel Centrino wireless-N 2230.

There is not a VPN connection on the Windows 8 machine.

The wireless at home and work uses WPA Personal. Not sure about the devices I connect to when traveling.

Thanks!

That pattern of symptoms suggests to me that the issue likely is something do with the wifi on the Windows 8 machine.  Trying to reinstall the drivers may help however it could be that the wireless adapter is just having issues.  The PC maker may have a way to check that for you.
