Is there a cure for slow DNS lookups?
I'm having significant delays with my browsers (Firefox and Chrome) looking up Internet site addresses. Lookups often take 5 seconds or more, which is a lot when there are often 10-20 lookups required to assemble a single Web page (mostly to add advertisements...) I also have pretty frequent lookup failures (the browser reports that site can't be found -- even sites like Google and Yahoo.)
I have my Internet connection set to automatically select DNS servers (per advice from Cox.)
Is anyone else experiencing this? Any good ideas to speed things up?
Thanks!

I use Google DNS.
Might want to check out Namebench, which can scan most of the DNS around you to see which is best.
Do you have the same problem if you enter in the IP for a website into the browser bar? For example; 68.99.123.161

Hello MartinFS,
Do you find the browser going to odd pages that you did want? Also, check the dns in your network settings when this happens and make sure that it is not being changed. There is a nasty little virus out there that does that and it causes a lot of slow downs and misdirects to other webpages with adds. You will know if this is the case since the check for auto dns will be gone and it will have a different dns listed.
Thanks,

Allan--I am (fortunately) not having that problem, at least! Thanks for the reply.

Tecknowhelp--
Thanks for the reply! I tried to use namebench but it threw an "index out of range" error at the last step--just before generating the results!! Too bad. (Tried it on Win 8.1, BTW.)
Based on other research, I have now "hard-coded" my Internet connection (via Win Control Panel) to use:
8.8.8.8
168.1.16.108
That seems to help.
However: (1) the hard-coded DNS settings on my Motorola Internet modem still show the old settings (68.105.28.11, 28.12, and 29.11) and I haven't figured out how to change that, and I don't know which of these settings (via Win or via the Motorola config menu) is actually in effect); and (2) I've re-booted the modem and my client machine, and also manually done a DHCP lease renewal via the modem menu, so maybe those actions cleared up some performance issues, rather than the DHS changes.. . .
Still looking for wisdom . . .
