Is my Cox Preferred Internet download speed really up to par?

I subscribe to Cox Preferred internet service, which is advertised as providing "up to 50 Mbps downloads".  When conducting multiple speed checks using the speed check tool on the Cox web site, my service is consistent at only about 8 to 11 Mbps download. The upload speed appears within expected range averaging 5 to 6.5 Mbps.  These tests were run on a desktop connected directly via ethernet  cable to the modem/router, and not by a WiFi connected device.

I upgraded my modem/router this year st the suggestion of Cox in order to maximize my performance.  I purchased the Cox recommended Netgear C3700.

My question is - Am I receiving the quality performance I am paying for?

@themew6

I'm not seeing any obvious problems when I look from this end although the wired device that's connected is only using a 100Mbps link suggesting it may be an older device.  Do you know what operating system the wired desktop computer is using or anything else about it's specifications?

Cox can see info about devices connected to the LAN when using the gateway? What exactly can they see?

I have the same issue, except I only get 3-5Mbps upload speed wired and/or wireless. I also use the Netgear C3700. I have never ever come close to the "up to 50Mpbs downloads"...my desktop is a fairly new Dell and I am using WIN10. It doesn't matter which server(s) I ping or whether I am Ethernet or WiFi. I see no difference from before I upgraded my service and modem/router...whether I pay for 5 or up to 50, I get the same quality of service.

If you want the best performance, I say get a stand alone modem and router. Gateways stink IMO.

With that said, try disconnecting everything except 1 wired connection and disable the wireless, and then test again. I would be very surprised if you got under 30-40Mbps. There could also be signal problems and congestion leading to a problem.

Before I give instructions to get signal levels, is this the gateway you both have?

Hi GIJoe,

You said you've upgraded. You haven't seen any difference in the speeds since you've upgraded the internet package? If there are no changes after Tecknowhelp suggestions, we can also take a closer look at the WiFi Modem. You may email us at cox.help@cox.com and include a link of this forums.

anthomul, it may hope to post some more info.

-What equipment are you using?

-Was that a speed test on ethernet, or wireless?

-If wireless, what is your speed test like while connected via ethernet?

I am using a NetGear CM 600 Modem and a Linksys 900N Router. I made sure to check with cox before buying the modem to make sure that it was best with the ultimate package.

The speed is from a wired Ethernet connection. I am using a Cat7 Ethernet Cable.

Hi Anthomul,

Have you tried any speed tests when connected directly to the Netgear modem? Bypassing the router helps us troubleshoot by allowing us to focus on what's happening with the modem only.
