Is it possible to configure two wireless routers from one Cox cable modem?
I have an old Firewall/Router set up that is also configured to a separate network (my wifes job set up). I don't know how to configure this if I replace this hardware with a new router, but this old router is having issues and is over 10 years old, I want to replace it with a new router.
Is it possible to configure the Cox modem to support two wireless routers? the old one and my new one? My attempts yesterday tell me this is not possible, but thought I would ask the forum for input.

Unless you are on Ultimate, you only get one ip address from Cox. Therefor you can only use one router as each require a unique ip address. You can use the 2nd router as a bridge or access point if it's firmware allows configuration as such. I would replace the 10 yo router with the new one, configure it and not look back.

What kind of firewall/router is it? It may be possible to use the new router as your main router, and then put the old router in the DMZ of the new router. If this works, and how well it works, depends alot of how the firewall is set up and what features your new router has, but it may be possible. Also, what is your new router?
Also, even if its possible, its going to be tricky. Have any experience configuring either router by the web user interface? IE 192.168.x.x

Thanks for the reply,
My wife works from home, and taps into a small medical offices network remotely. It is not a traditional VPN, but the Firewall has something to do with the VPN, not sure what... All of my attempts to get the new Router to work with, or without this firewall, did not allow this remote network connection.
I am far from an IT guy (by the nature of my rather clueless question), so my last resort was to try and set up a second wireless network. I should have known this was not possible by my IP conflicts I encountered with setting up the new router....

I wonder if this firewall you are talking about is actually a Linux box running something like Openswan or even the older FreeS/WAN. They are both open source Linux based VPN programs. Unless you can use Health Edge's suggestion of putting the this old box in the DMZ of a new router, I'm afraid you will have to contact the people who support the network for the office your wife is working for. Maybe posting more details about this box will help us figure out what's going on here.

Thanks for the reply and input. I am out of my league to sort out what is going on, I am going to have the guy that set this up do the reconfiguration, when I can get a hold of hiim.
If you are curious, the Firewall that was installed when this network was set up about 5 years ago is a NETGEAR ProSafe VPN Firewall, FVS318. To complicate things, there is a VOIP phone that is tapped into this office via an Ethernet cable to the firewall, yet my wife works over the wireless network to access the internet/office network.

Alot of it will depend how the Netgear firewall is configure. Who originally configured it? Does her work have a IT department?

It sounds like the Netgear ProSafe router is the actual VPN client from what you've described. If that is the case and you're wanting to upgrade the router you'll need to upgrade to one that has similar VPN capabilities. This could put you into commercial network gear territory, I think consulting with a qualified network engineer/technician on your requirements will probably be best at this point.

Great idea, azbadger. I would hate to give advice to someone then have his wife out of work because we screwed up the config. You know, happy wife ....... Your best bet is going with the original installer or whomever the office is currently using for IT support. Good luck with your project and please let us know how it turns out.
