IPv6 setup?

According to http://www.cox.com/residential/support/internet/article.cox?articleId=%7B0bced860-9666-11df-6baf-000000000000%7D my Internet only service with my personally owned Motorola Surfboard should be IPv6 enabled.

And according to the documents I have for my modem and router they should be IPv6 capable. Here is the information about my modem:

Model Name: SB6141
Vendor Name: Motorola
Firmware Name: SB_KOMODO-1.0.6.14-SCM03-NOSH
Boot Version: PSPU-Boot(25CLK) 1.0.12.18m3
Hardware Version: 7.0
Serial Number: 374781423200698410020022
Firmware Build Time: Jan 22 2015 14:31:03

My router is a ASUS RT-N16 with firmware version 3.0.0.4.276 which the router claims is the latest release.

When checking my modem's configuration page is says that "Modem's IP Mode" is set to "IPv4 Only". There are no end user controls on this page, so it appears to be configured by Cox on modem power up. I thought maybe that was an artifact of the modem's status presentation so tried setting IPv6 on the router to "Native with DHCP-DP" to see if it could pull any configuration but that failed.

I could setup the router using 6in4 to another IPv6 provider, but I'd rather use Cox. Is there anything I can do here or is this configuration entirely in the hands of Cox?

stf,

I see you've emailed us and I've replied there. Our residential implementation of IPv6 has been completed. I've verified other devices nearby are pulling both IPv4 and IPv6 addresses so it doesn't appear to be a local problem. I've provided some additional information in my email reply.

For the follow up: The issue was bad firmware in my router. The very prompt email back from Cox support helped me isolate the problem to the router.

So thank you Cox support!

Hi stf,

Yes that modem should have the capability for IPv6, I see that you purchased a retail modem. Have you spoken with the modem manufacturer for assistance with the settings? We can also check to see if there is an update version of firmware for the modem. Please email us at cox.help@cox.com including the account information and we'll look into this for you.

The settings? On a SB6141? OP is correct in that there are no end user controls once Cox loads the config file. Your best bet, stf, is to go to DSLR and search for your ASUS ipv6 settings. Or for any other questions you may have really. RIP, Tecknowhelp.

As to the firmware, that SCM03 must be the newest pre-installed from ARRIS. Most SB6141 owners still have SCM01. It was always understood, or so we were told, that when a new firmware version is released by the manufacturer Cox tests it against their network for compatibility before pushing it out. And then only if it significantly improves performance.

So, has SCM03 been approved for distribution? Or has it been found to be unharmful, but not particularly useful, so if it's pre loaded Cox won't roll it back but doesn't push it either?

@Jerry

It looks like your firmware version is the most current approved version at this time. To answer your other question typically there is a process that checks the firmware by modem model on a nightly basis and re-flashes the modem if there is a version mis-match.

@ChrisL

Thanks for checking that for me.

Interesting. I am sure that I clicked "subscribe" when I started this thread but I sure wasn't notified that there were any replies. Good thing I eventually checked back.

Sounds like I need to email cox.help.

FWIW, that modem was purchase for and first used on a Comcast connect where I used to live. It is possible that Comcast pushed a firmware update. Don't really know as "it just worked". On the other hand, I did not need to verify and check some VPS hosted servers for proper IPv6 operation back then so IPv6 was not an issue.

- Since this thread is marked solved, I MOVED THE POST TO different thread -

http://forums.cox.com/forum_home/internet_forum/f/5/p/14616/56660.aspx#56660

-----------------------------

My SB6141 has been going off line regularly.  I have the SCM01 version of this box and would like Cox to reflash my modem with the update to see if this makes my modem shutdowns go away.    If I have to call in and 'do battle' with tech support on this I'm not inclined to.   At the moment I've set QoS (in my TPLink C3200 router) at my SLA rates (Premier) and this seems to keep my SB6141 from going off line.

Any thoughts on a pain free method to getting my 6141 flashed?   Thanks in advance!

@gerrym

I took a look and it appears your modem is already running the latest approved firmware version.

I have this same issue. How can I get the firmware upgrade pushed to my SB6141? The Arris site says that it needs to come from my internet provider. Here are the details from my modem configuration page.

Model Name: SB6141
Vendor Name: Motorola
Firmware Name: SB_KOMODO-1.0.6.14-SCM01-NOSH
Boot Version: PSPU-Boot(25CLK) 1.0.12.18m3
Hardware Version: 7.0
Serial Number: 348781312326463309020001
Firmware Build Time: Mar 6 2014 15:23:55
This page provides an overview of the Modem Configuration Manager, and brief troubleshooting information. The help here is applicable only to the Cable Modem functionality.

Very nice! I wasn't aware native IPv6 was available now.

When did Cox finally start supporting native IPv6 for nearly everyone? This month? I wish I would've heard sooner, such as via an email.

@jbd99

All DOCSIS 3.0 modem support IPv6 out of the box. You just need to enable IPv6 on the device connected to the modem to get a lease.

I am in CT and I think we were one of the last markets to implement IPv6.  I've been using it since Feb or March of this year.  I have noticed one problem, Windows 10 kept loosing it's IPv6 configuration.  A simple solution is the following 2 commands entered from an Admin cmd prompt:

netsh winsock reset catalog
netsh int ipv6 reset reset.log

reboot after entering the two commands.  I haven't had an issue with my Win 10 IPv6 since resetting the settings using the above commands.  HTH
