Internet Speed Test

I have Preferred Internet and speed tests on the Cox servers show over 25 Mbps download speeds. However, any other website I've checked shows barely over 5 Mbps. I would expect the Cox servers to show the fastest downloads compared to other sites, but I would not expect the other sites to be 80% slower.

I had Version FIOS before moving to Irvine. The test speeds on dslreports.com gave download speeds that accurately matched what Verizon advertised. I tested my Cox connection at this same site. Why is it that I cannot get reasonable results when connecting directly to the cable modem provided Cox at the time of installation?

I have downloaded files from various websites that took way longer than the 25 Mbps download speed would require. For example, a 125 MB file took over 10 minutes to download where I would expect it to finish in less than a minute. Other smaller files would take over a minute when I was expecting the file to download in seconds. That is what I've been accustomed to as a Verizon FIOS customer.

Is my bandwidth being throttled on all websites except Cox's? Since the Cox speed test is showing the proper download speed, what else can cause the slow download speeds at most of the other websites I visit? Please explain this discrepancy as I am not getting the service for which I have paid.

Thanks.

I was having slow internet issues this morning as well. I contacted Cox about it and after a good 10 minutes of unhelpfulness I asked if there was some kind of server maintenance going on or some kind of firmware upgrade. He told me that there was server maintenance going on until 10:00 AM EST 06JAN14. I have no idea if this is actually the truth or he was just trying to tell me something to make me go away. Only time will tell.

Hi MartS,

There are other limitations that will affect your download speed, if the site has a cap on the amount of bandwidth they allow for a download.  We would do not throttle our internet service in any way.  What were the results of the last speed test that you ran?  I would recommend testing a different site (speedtest.net and speakeasy.net are good sites to try).

Hi Derrick,

Thanks for your quick reply...

I used the megapath and linkline servers for the tests. Both gave a little over 5 Mbps download speeds. This is what I was getting with my essential internet before I upgraded. Did somebody forget to turn something ON for my upgrade? Since the upgrade, I haven't noticed a significant increase in download speeds from ANY website I visit. Even page refreshes are just as slow as with essential. I know in some cases this is related to the server hosting the page, but I'm comparing it to my recent experiences on Verizon. Since I was getting consistent 15 Mbps download speeds on Verizon, I expected the 25 Mbps to be SCREAMIN' in comparison. It's not happening...yet.

Maybe, thats what I would have checked first, but I assume the moderator has already done that. I also assume you have rebooted the modem atleast once.

Besides that, what kind of equipment are you using? Modem? Router? Also what speedtest site (not server but domain) are you using? Have you tried the one in interest tools?

I will be able to be more helpful when I know more about whats going on.

I connected directly to the modem through a long extension to my family room. Through this connection I was able to get at least 25 Mbps down using the Cox internet tools. However, from any other website I tried, I was only getting 5 Mbps using this same connection.

In case it makes a difference (don't know why it should), I'm on an iMac running Safari under Mavericks os. This system was running very fast on Verizon's Fios @15 Mbps. I was hoping to get the similar speeds with this upgrade.

It was my understanding that if I ever reach my data limit during any billing cycle, Cox would throttle down my speed until the next cycle. Could that be what happened and Cox forgot to reset my bandwidth?

Cox doesn't throttle Internet connections for any reason so that wouldn't be the issue.  If speeds are fine on Cox I'd suggest trying to get some trace routes to hosts you're having speed issues with so we can see what else may be going on.

I'll see If I can get some traces to various sites I visit when I get home.

If I'm seeing this at websites that claim to measure my internet bandwidth, what do you think is happening? Since my connections must be good enough to see full speed at cox.net, how can I lose 80% of my speed going to another site? It can't be anything going out of my house, right.

While you're waiting for my traces, do you have any insights on what else could cause this anomaly. That's assuming that the other servers are OK. I'm wondering since I have to believe that a website that claims to measure internet bandwidth would optimize their servers and pipes for speed. The ones I visit see download speeds over 100 Mbps.

Thanks,

Martin

This is the sort of things trace routes would tell us.  Depending on the result you get we may or may not see latency issues along one particular path but not another.

Here's the trace route from dslreports.com. I confirmed that the cox.net speed tool can achieve over 25 Mbps over my WiFi connection so I did the trace route over the same connection. I also found a couple more sites that were able to reach the same speeds as the cox.net tool. This included http://my.verizon.com/micro/speedte.. and http://www.megapath.com/speedtestpl..

I also found a couple sites that were much slower besides dslreports.com. I included the trace routes for one of the other speed tests and for a site where the downloaded file took twice as long as I thought it should.

Since I was able to confirm that there were other speed tests that achieve your advertised bandwidth, I don't have much to complain about. But, I would still be interested in why dslreports is reporting such slow download times since I have used it in the past (from a different location and ISP) with good results.

Thanks for taking the time to help me find a solution to my issues.

Hi MartS,

The trace route results you provided do not show any latency (minus the one timeout on hop 4 on the second set of results), there appears to be nothing impeding the speed of your connection.  I am not sure why DSLreports.com shows slower speeds, that could be due to the location of their speed test server.  It is supposed to find a location that is closest to you to run those tests to get the best results, geographic location also plays a part.
