Internet bouncing
My Internet Wi-Fi connection has been bouncing so much that I am getting charged extra from my cell phone provider. How do I remedy this situation? Thank you. Diana M

Could you include some technical details of the problem? What modem/router/gateway? Is wired working fine? Can you define "bouncing"?

I am renting a D link router model DIR – 655 from Cox. I am not sure how to test the wired theory please let me know what to do. I can literally watch it go up down up down every morning on my cell phone or tablet and don't know why. Thank you Diana

It's possible you may have some nearby interference sources that are causing issues with your WiFi network. Make sure your router is kept in an open area away from things like microwave ovens, baby monitors, cordless phones, etc. While WiFi is the most convenient way to connect most of your devices to the Internet, the fastest and most reliable way to connect to the Internet is through a direct wired connection from your device to your router. Learn more at http://bit.ly/ImproveHomeNetwork.
The next time you notice that your WiFi signal is "bouncing" around, connect a laptop to the DLink router with an Ethernet cord and see if the connection stabilizes. If it does not, disconnect the DLink router completely and try this test. Connect your laptop directly to your modem using an Ethernet cord, and reset your modem using the reset button on the back (or by unplugging the power). Once the modem resets, go to several different websites and see if you notice any speed or connection problems. Taking the router out of the picture allows us to see if the modem is having problems (rather than the router). Please let us know the results of this test! We may need to schedule a service call so an on-site tech can investigate what's happening.

Since when does Cox rent routers? How much are you paying per month?
Do you have any wired connections? When wireless goes down, try the wired one.
What are you "watching"? Your wireless network? Sounds like Wifi interference. Wifi troubleshooting is not for the laymen, the moderator gave good advice, and we can give more, but it's going to get complicated. Have you ever used a program like inSSIDer? If not, and you DO rent the router and pay for the Home Network Plan, I would get a Cox technician out there to look. Thats what you are paying for. Make sure they schedule a Home Network technician, and not a normal internet technician.
