intermittent cable modem resets caused by signal drop
Hello all
Here's the lengthy status of my current problems with cox cable modem dropping.
Cable modem SB6121 will lose connectivity and reset, going down to one light, then rebuilding the connection after about a one minute outage. Happens regularly and randomly.
Here's an example of the logs found in the motorola cable modem. If you haven't checked your own cable modem logs and you're having this problem, here's the link to prove you're having the same problem as me: http://192.168.100.1/cmLogs.htm . I xxx'd out my MAC addresses in the logs.

When it comes to signal strength, this is apparently not the problem.
Here's what motorola says should be fine, according to Motorola Tech Support:
Downstream Signal to Noise Ratio (SNR): 25 dB or greater
Downstream Power Level: +15 to -15dBmV
Upstream Transmit Power Level: less than 58dBmV
My values, pasted from http://192.168.100.1/cmSignal.htm. I've sampled these values over time and they have never strayed much from these numbers.

After multiple lengthy calls with Motorola Tech Support, who are surprisingly helpful, they told me that this problem is definitely at the service provider end (Cox), with the signal dropping out on the modem. They offered for free to replace my old Motorola SB6120 with a new SB6121, saying they're only doing this to prove that the cable modem isn't the problem, and to aide my case for Cox to fix it.
Now, I've been receiving these random restarts (which sometimes occur in bursts of 3-4 per hour) since I lived at my prior residence, three blocks away from my new place in the same neighborhood.
So, in summary.
Cable modem random restarts resulting in 1 minute outages.
Two different cable modems.
Two different HOUSES in the same neighborhood.
Signal strength to the cable modem is NOT a problem.
What does Cox do?
Schedule another technician to come out. The last scheduled appointment on Thursday from 5-7pm didn't call, didn't show. Got another one scheduled on Monday. We'll see.
I'm posting this because if anyone else has the same problems, they should check their Motorola cable modem logs and signal strengths and post here.

How can this be listed as solved?
Is the solution to drop Cox like a hot patatoe and get service elsewhere?
COX is a big fail for me too.

I have a SB510 and usually get drop outs 3 times a day when i'm home. This has been happening since March. I've just put up with it since then because I don't really feel like dealing with Cox's terrible Customer Service and then have them send a tech out who will say that everything is fine when it is not. For how much money I pay them I should have 100% up time and have a flawless internet connection. The modem even restarted itself as I was typing this. I don't think this problem is so much Motorola's fault as it is Cox's. They claim to be the best ISP around ,but to me they seem like one of the worst.
I also find it funny how people on this thread are saying that they are switching to Century Link and Cox isn't doing a single thing about it.

If the modem is restarting on you that frequently it may be time for a technician to come out and troubleshoot further. Feel free to go to http://192.168.100.1 and post your signal levels here and I'll see if there is anything going on there.

My SB6121 had the same issues with COX in Annandale. Once or twice a day the modem would lock up and I would have to reboot it. Many calls to the poor tech support confirmed that all signal levels were good, prior to the reboot. Onc it was rebooted it would work fine for another day or so.
I finally got fed up with this and had to downgrade to an old DOCSIS 2.0 modem. Even the downgrade was like pulling teeth. The support tech had no clue as to what she was doing. I had to explain what I needed done at least 5 times. Then she kept inputting the wrong modem. It took over 45 minutes just to downgrade the modem. I'm afraid to upgraded to a different DOCSIS 3.0 as it may take another 45 minutes to upgrade the modem.

I have been having very similar difficulties as all that have posted here. I am in Gilbert, AZ, using a SB6121 (Docsys 3.0). The problems started only after 2-3 months of having enabled this modem. I am having the additional weirdness that the modem seems to lose the date and some of the log messages post with the Epoch as the time stamp:
I have already been through the song and dance with Cox support; a tech came out and did a few things to the physical infrastructure. This has not solved the problem. Should I contact tech support again? Any advise would be appreciated.

What a surprise, I'm having the same issue. It's a shame too because I've used Cox for years and never really had an issue. Suddenly, a few months ago, my modem is constantly rebooting itself. It seems to be related to the amount of data I am using. If I am simply surfing the internet the drops seem to only happen once an hour or so...but god forbid I try to download a patch AND browse the web. Then it happens about every five minutes.
I'm thinking about recording video of my cable modem next to a stopwatch and throwing that on YouTube (assuming I can stay connected long enough to upload it).

That even is a non-issue and not related to service. That gets logged when the modem receives a configuration instruction it doesn't support. The modem configurations are setup to support a broad variety of modems and hence they will all log something similar.,

I seem to be having the same problem in Scottsdale. I've had an SB6120 with COX for over a year without problems.

Add me to the list. I've been fighting Cox technical support for weeks and the response I consistently get is to blame the customer and claim it is because I use a wireless router. I even get emails saying "we will contact you within 1 business day." Nope, I have to call and pester.
Even AFTER I changed over and plugged the computer directly into the modem, I am being told it will cost $40-$100 to get a tech to come out.
Someone PLEASE do SOMETHING!

The Cox email response to my problem: extortion. Either I sign up for the Cox Service Protection Plan or my service will not be restored.
You know that's a crime in the state of Virginia?
§ 18.2-59. Extortion of money, property or pecuniary benefit.
Any person who (i) threatens injury to the character, person, or property of another person...and thereby extorts money...from him or any other person...is guilty of a Class 5 felony.

I am having the same problem that started a few months ago. I first replaced my wireless router. that did not fix the problem. Then I did some research on Cox's web site and found that my Motorola SB5101 was not a DOCSIS 3.0 so I bought a SB6121 that was on the recommended list from Cox. It too is loosing intenet connection and I need to reset in order for it to be restored. I have only had it one day and it is happening already. Wish I had read this posting before buying the new modem. Has anybody solved this problem? My zip code is 85032 in Phoenix. Do I need to log a call into the service center to get this recified?
