Intermittent black screen

The tv screen will go to black and remain so for 5-10 seconds, no sound , no picture. It then comes back on without any action on my part. This can happen 2-3 times per hour .It does not matter what channel or time. It is the worst with the contour box. A regular box in another room does the same thing; however, less often. It can totally disrupt recordings and Netflix. It is becoming a severe irritant.

I've sometimes seen something like that happen with incompatible HDMI cables.  Try a different cable.

Hi Spokane55,

I have a few questions. Do you receive an error when this happens? What type of connection is going from the box to the TV? How are you streaming Netflix, are you streaming directly from the TV, or connected via another device?

Thanks,

It is an HDMI connection (Cox sup[plied cable). Netflix is with ROKU; however, the issue is there with or without the Netflix connection. There is no error message as the screen just goes black (sound also out), stays black for 5-10 seconds and then the picture comes back.

Hi Spokane,

How do you have the Roku connected to your TV? Does the issue continue when you are watching Netflix through your Roku?

The issue has nothing to do with Netflix. The same problem exists when there is no physical connection with Roku. This appears to be an issue with Cox.

@Spokane55

Since the issue occurs with a cable box as well as a Roku device, it points to a possible issue with the cables being used or the port they're connected to. Are you switching the HDMI cable between the Roku and the box, or are you using 2 separate connections?

The cable box is connected through HDMI cable supplied by Cox. Forget about the ROKU. The issue is present when ROKU is not connected (also HDMI when connected). It is a separate connection when set up. This appears to be a signal problem.

So did you try switching HDMI cables?  I have seen that exact problem with HDMI cables that the TV didn't like or are incompatible with it.  For what version of HDMI is your cable?

Signal problems are more of seeing large square artifacts, frozen pictures and broken sound.  The black screen for 10 secs symptom sounds like an HDMI issue.
