Inability to access live sports using Watch ESPN

I'm not sure the reason, but I am unable to access most if not all of Watch ESPN since I've switched to Cox High Speed Internet. I use my login credentials, and I'm signed in to use it. However whenever I try and watch anything live I get "You are not authorized to play this content. Please contact your provider". Anyone know why that would be? I mean, what's the point of having a service provider who's listed to have access to the site, if you can't actually watch anything?

Some WatchESPN content  requires that you subscribe to ESPN TV service with us in order to access.  You can find out more about requirements by visiting:

I appreciate the response, and explanation thanks. However I think it's backhanded what cox is doing. What person in their right mind would get cable to watch streaming live internet video? That's moronic. The whole point of just having internet is to not pay for cable. Nice way to make more money, but to a person like me, it's wrong.

I disagree. The reason why you cant watch ESPN online without paying  for cable is because Cox pays ESPN per subscriber, so ESPN won't let you in unless you have paid Cox because Cox pays ESPN. It's quite logical, even if the answer isn't to your benefit. Anything ESPN doesn't charge extra for, you get for free.

Can you state your logic? The whole point of having internet is to go online, it doesn't get you access to every site. Thats like going to Netflix and getting mad that you have to pay for that too. If you want the privilege of"cutting the cord" then it's your responsibility to figure out how to still get the same content for free. There are lots of options, but Cox giving you something they pay for, for free, now THAT would be moronic, as in lacking good sense and judgement.

You do realize that WatchESPN online is available to anyone with internet access right? You do also realize that when the site was first introduced with live programming it didn't require you to have cable since it's an "internet" site. You do understand that right? It's the internet, not cable. I could care less about the cable argument you're trying to make. This is how the cable companies keep making money. They knew the trend of dropping cable and having internet only (Streaming Netflix, Hulu, etc.)  was going to hurt their pockets, so they made a deal with the devil to make sure their pockets still pour with money. I'm looking for nothing "free" here. I pay for internet service. "WatchESPN" is an "internet" site. Having nothing to do with cable, my "logic" makes perfect sense.

"The whole point of just having internet is to not pay for cable"

Not sure what you don't understand here. The sentence is truth. If you just want internet, you don't want cable. Duh. If Cox went out of business today, would ESPN's website not exist? I pay for internet, was trying to access content ON the internet...shouldn't have to pay for "cable" to do that.

"The whole point of having the internet is to go online"

Wow, thanks for that. Wasn't sure that's what it was for. WatchESPN is an "WEB" site. It's ONLINE. Answer me this. WatchESPN requires you have a provider. Cox is my provider. I log in usinig my cox account. It works. (why would it work? I only have internet.) I go to watch ESPN 3 "live" and it works! Imagine that! I then go to watch a college Lacrosse game on ESPN U.....low and behold it works! I go to watch SPORTSCENTER, and it tells me I don't have the credentials. Hmmm? Why would that be? So I can have access, but I can't as well? Where's the "logic" in that?

"Thats like going to Netflix and getting mad that you have to pay for that too"

Huh? This comparison is silly. You tried to hard. Netflix is a streaming site, that charges a monthly fee for its services. WatchESPN is a website on the internet for which I have internet access to go to. The monthly fee I pay...is my internet service fee I pay Cox.

It's pretty simple. The cable companies know what the trend is slowly becoming, and want to make sure they attempt to stop it. Or at least slow it down. Apparently this is over your head, but that doesn't mean it isn't happening. The "cord is connected to the cable box, not the modem/router. That cable is still attached and is paid for.

No, I don't realize that because you are wrong. I won't continue this conversation since I really don't care what you think and you have bored me. Bye

What is WatchESPN?

WatchESPN is your single online and mobile destination for ESPN, ESPN2, ESPN3, ESPNU, ESPNews, ESPN Deportes, ESPN Goal Line and ESPN Buzzer Beater. Access to each network is based on your subscription with an affiliate video provider. Click here for more information."

I believe the game starts tonight at 7PM on Cox Sports Network(CSN) according to schedule here. Isn't covered by ESPN.

Not sure if you can watch CSN online. I couldn't find a way, but maybe someone else can. Either way might want to make new thread since not a ESPN issue.
