It all depends on what you want.

Most people when they get a HDTV they will also get a HD cable box so they can watch HD channels. The HD channels come for free and give you HD version of most SD channels you get now, but the HD cable box itself cost extra.

If you don't have any premium channels though, and just want HD versions of your local channels, you can bypass any box and connect the cable wire direct to the new HDTV. Set it to cable mode and have it to do a scan and should pick up a bunch of HD channels you don't  need anything for.

Hi johnsmallberries,

If you already have a receiver and you swap it for an HD only receiver, there shouldn't be any change in your monthly rate. I can review the account to verify. Please email me at cox.help@cox.com.

An "HD only receiver" ?? Meaning it doesn't get SD?

Ehhh... That's sort of our own terminology slipping out, sorry about that. An HD-only receiver would be just an "HD receiver" as opposed to an "HD/DVR," meaning an HD receiver that's not a DVR.

So, an "HD receiver-only" as opposed to an "HD-only receiver." Right?
