I have packet loss and need help!

At hop 6 I'm getting 100% packet loss and I think it has severely impacted my gaming quality.  That IP is out of Macon GA, and I just read another post about an IP address in Macon GA having problems.

Thanks in advance,

Lars

Good news is the data you've posted isn't showing packet loss at hop 6 but rather ICMP deprioritization.  If it were packet loss you would never be able to communicate with hop 7 or anything beyond.  Is there any particular issue you're experiencing?

Hop 6 isn't your problem. Notice that by hop 7 there is only 1% packet loss?  If the packets were really being loss at hop 6, how would they get to hop 7? Instead hop 6 is still passing the packet along fine, its just delaying how long it takes to report back that the packet was sent. This is called ICMP deportation and is common between 2 different network providers. Its not service effecting.

Instead, what needs to be looked into is the 1-3% packet loss your having at hop 2. Notice how that 1-3% carries through the hops? Thats the hop between your router and the first step inside Cox network. The question is how often does it happen and where it happens. Try ping -n 50 10.132.40.1  and ping -n 50 192.168.100.1 and post the results.

Also, what are the signal level of the modem? You can usually find them at the 192.168.100.1 webpage on your desktop.

::Edit:: Wrote my reply before reading Chris. Great minds think alike and all that. lol

Ah okay, I am new to the subject of packet loss.  I am not sure about finding the signal level of the modem (unless you simply mean how many bars of service am I getting, in which case I have full signal).  Here are the other two pings you asked about:

I am experiencing heavy lag and rubberbanding intermittently while playing two separate video games, and it has been going on for a month or two.

Your gaming on wireless? Boo. Go wired, its so much better. Wireless adds 10-40ms jitter even on a good connection.

What are you using to run those tests, I don't recognize the format. And those are pathpings, not basic ping. And getting the signal levels is pretty straight forward. Sorry, I don't know how to make it any simpler. You just got to the page 192.168.100.1 in your web browser.

I would have to agree that for time sensitive applications wireless has it's disadvantages.  If at all possible I would suggest trying to test with either a wired connection or even without the router to see if there is any difference.

I have Cox's combo router/wireless deal.  I've been playing games (Diablo 3, battlefield 4, titanfall, League of legends, SWToR) over wifi for about 2 years on this setup with absolutely no problems (concerning gaming).  It's only been in the last month or two that I've been getting intermittent lag on both Diablo 3 and Battlefield 4.

I am using cmd.exe to run a pathping.  it goes:  pathping xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx >c:\pathping.txt

Don't know much about any of this, trying to learn quick so I can get this stuff resolved.

As for the 192.168.100.1 in my web browser for the signal level, I've tried in IE, chrome, and firefox.  I always get "Can't load the page" or "can't communicate" or something to that effect.

Your gaming on wireless, and a wireless gateway? Thats double ouch. May have worked for you, but your running off hardware that is maybe..30-40$ per unit? I wouldn't play on it and I would consider myself a casual gamer. Either way it looks like the gateway is the problem, its just a matter of finding out if its cable signal, network, or hardware related.

What model device do you have? Might need to use 192.168.0.1 or some other varient to access signal levels,  since it's a gateway.

I don't understand what you mean by 30-40$ per unit.  I've been gaming over a wireless connection for about 4 years now and have never had a problem with lag or delay due to the wireless connection.  I've played call of duty, titanfall, bf3 bf4, bad company, rome and rome 2, awesomenauts, diablo 2 and 3, Star wars, WoW, conunter-strike, starcraft 1 and 2, etc. and I've never experienced consistent lag like this.

Again, I have only been experiencing problems for the last few months, so I don't believe that my setup has anything to do with it. I understand what you are saying about a wired connection, but unless cox wants to come install several internet cables for free that option is out.

So back to the problem at hand. I used 192.168.0.1 and got to the router page.

My mistake, I was thinking of the Netgear CG3000D which sells for like 24$ I think? The Motorola SB6580 is a retail unit, so isn't like the cheaper non retail units sold directly to ISP's. I still stand by my statement that wireless is inferior to wired for gaming purposes. Part of it is the technical difference in how wireless works and how it adds a latency overhead to what ever latency you already have to the game servers.  However, part of it is the principle of the matter, just like a race car driver shouldn't use a automatic, I don't think a gamer should game on wireless. And a gateway is generally inferior to a separate modem and router, where you can completely control the firmware and configuration of the device.

Besides that, it looks like you have a issue with your downstream SNR. Not sure if thats what is causing the problem, but thats where I would start. Have you noticed if that changed when you started having the problem?

PS. Found this thread on a different forum. Different ISP, but points to possible firmware issue?
