Huge number of Uncorrectable Codewords and weakish Downstream Power
So I decided to check on my cable modem stats the other day while helping a coworker with a issue on her modem. To my surprise I found some pretty bad numbers:
| Signal Stats (Codewords) | Bonding Channel Value | |||||||
| Channel ID | 102 | 101 | 103 | 104 | 109 | 110 | 111 | 112 |
| Total Unerrored Codewords | 77981631475 | 9265140408 | 9265077708 | 9264976420 | 9264890391 | 77984461144 | 77984371923 | 77984435227 |
| Total Correctable Codewords | 1035137 | 892101 | 908731 | 926070 | 971621 | 969265 | 977415 | 967691 |
| Total Uncorrectable Codewords | 4628196 | 1640706 | 1694889 | 1787965 | 1784303 | 1693629 | 1775857 | 172323 |
Doing the math on the worst one, that comes out to 0.005934982% - which you may think is tiny, but according to http://www.zcorum.com/codeword-errors-cripple-your-customers-connection/ -
In general, a codeword error rate of 0.005% indicates a degradation in service. A rate of 0.01% or higher represents a problem that is noticeably impacting user experience.
My downstream power level also fluctuates between -8 and -5 dBmV throughout the day - which is on the low end of the spectrum.
Is anyone else in Las Vegas experiencing a high number of uncorrectable codewords and/or low downstream power levels? I'm currently on the Premier package and have a Motorola SB614 modem.

I would like to take a look at the modem signal levels in addition to the information you provided. Looks like there is an issue there worth investigating. Do you have any splitters connected to the cable outlet? Please send an email to cox.help@cox.com with the account information, we'll look into this for you. -Derrick

Isn't it the case that the Total Unerrored Codewords count only goes so high, say 99999999999, then rolls over to 0 and starts counting again? Much like a 1960's cars odometer which has only 5 digits and shows 25341 miles when it really has 125341 miles. While the Correctable and Uncorrectable totals keep going until they too reach 99999999999?
From the Totals shown I'd say the modem in question has been up for a while. Enough time for the Total Unerrored Codewords to roll over?
To check the percentage accurately one must reset the modem and look at the totals daily before the rollover occurs. Or divide the Uncorrectables by the number of uptime days to get a daily average. Because it's not the actual total that matters, it's the rate of increase.
The Uncorrectables on my SB6141 increase by 10,000 to 15,000 a day while the signal levels are near perfect as I can see from this end. It's been doing that since around August of last year when Cox was making changes to their infrastructure here in the San Diego market readying for the speed increase.
It concerned me for awhile but there was no loss of speed, connectivity or any other issues so I learned to ignore it.

Hi Jerry,
Unfortunately that's not the case here - those stats were from only 9 days of uptime.
