How can I set up the DVR to turn the TV on and tune it to the DVR HDMI?

I have had a few DVD players, the low cost type, each one of them when turned on it automatically turns on the TV and selects the HDMI port it is connected to.

I would like to be able to do the same with the DVR. When I turn the DVR on, I would like it to turn the TV on and on the DVR HDMI.

I figured if the cheap DVD players can do it, it might be possible for the COX fancy DVR to do as much.

After I watch a DVD and I want to go back to the DVR I have to find the TV remote and manually turn the TV on and then select the HDMI for the DVR.

A bit annoying, I was hoping there is a setting for that.

You were watching the DVD with the TV off? As far as selecting your HDMI input for you, what model DVD players were these?

BTW, the DVR remote can be configured to turn on the DVR and the TV just by holding down the red POWER button for a couple of seconds. Try it.

The DVD player, a SONY, the previous a Toshiba, both act the same.

If I turn the DVD player on and the TV is OFF, the TV comes ON and it tunes to HDMI #3, if not there. If the TV happened to be on, it just flips the input to HDMI #3. TV ON or OFF, or HDMI  input, a DVD player will get the TV playing with no further input.

The DVR has not effect on the TV at all regardless of whether it is ON or OFF. It doesn't turn the TV ON and it doesn't switch to HDMI #1

I normally watch with the TV ON. After I finish watching the DVD and turn both the DVD and TV OFF, the TV remains on HDMI #3.

To watch the DVR I have to turn the TV ON and then use the TV remote to select HDMI #1.

I tried swapping the HDMIs, no difference.

It sounds like you may have been using HDMI-CEC which will go by a variety of different friendly names depending on the manufacturer such as Sony's Bravia Sync or Samsung Anynet+ for example.  Our boxes currently do not support HDMI-CEC, I'll pass your feedback along to our product development team.

Chris, once you mentioned it I did some Googling, I have the Bravia sync that needs "Control for HDMI" from the DVR.

I thought that hi tech DVRs like the COX would have it considering that even a cheap old Toshiba that I threw away for being too old had the capability.

It could be a matter of software and an update on the DVR would be nice.

Thank you for figuring it out for me and I hope the product development team can add the feature.

The issue is actually a matter of hardware and software.  Any given device needs an HDMI port capable of supporting HDMI-CEC as well as software capable of utilizing it.  I'm not entirely sure where the Contour boxes are with regards to these issues however I've passed your feature request along.

I bet both the Sony and the Toshiba DVD players have model numbers. That's what I asked for. [So I can look at the manuals online.]

As I wrote, your DVR remote will power up both your TV and your DVR. Your DVR remote will also select the TV's input.

The SONY DVD is a BDP-S6200 the Toshiba was thrown away.

I appreciate your efforts and as soon as I get a chance, I'll find the DVR remote manual and go over its programming.

Quite frankly, I believe that Chris has already explained the issue but, I'm keeping an open mind.

When you said you used low-end models, I took you at your word. The BDP-S6200 is a BD player. It has 4K upscaling, 2D to 3D conversion, dual-core processor, etc., hardly a low-end model. Even so, I don't see in the manual that it tells the TV which input to select. Are you sure that your TV isn't doing that?

Is your TV a Sony? Does it have Bravia Sync? Selected Sony BD players and Sony Bravia TVs will turn on/off at the same time and select HDMI inputs when connected together. No, Cisco/SA, TiVo, or Motorola DVRs don't work on Bravia Sync.

So, all I can do is wait for a DVR update.

I appreciate your efforts, thanks.

There is no guarantee that any future Cox issued DVR or DVR update will be compatible with Sony's Bravia Sync. Bravia Sync is not 100% the same as HDMI's CEC. Programming your DVR remote to turn your TV ON/OFF with your DVR, and change your TV's input is about as good as you'll get.
