Home Phone voicemail (please help!)

Okay, so I just now hooked up a telephone on my phone essential and I would like to set up a voicemail. First things first, does a voicemail automatically come with my phone, i.e. do i have to pay for it?

If so, i call *298 to set up my my voicemail and the operator says enter my mailbox number or just press # if i am using my own phone, which i am. Every time it says log in attempt failed. I have no idea how to even get into the system to set this up.

any suggestions?

Hi Nighthawk,

Voicemail is included in the Cox Digital Telephone Premier package, but not in the Essential package. It sounds like this may be the issue. It's probably not too late to change your package, if need be.

Alright I have a couple more questions; and thank you very much for the quick reply!

Since I can't have a voicemail with the essential package, is there a way I can limit the amount of time my phone rings?

Not to my knowledge.  You can always setup an answering machine to pick up your phone after a predetermined number of rings.

Second question is anyone that calls my number will be the ones charged, not me for picking up right?

Correct, if there is any charge it is to the caller, not the receiver.  Unlike old cell phone plans, there is no charge for incoming calls.

Third question: do I get a certain amount of minutes or something each month with the essential package to make long distance calls?

No, AFAIK based on my market, you get unlimited calling to your local area.  Long distance is billed based on what LD plan you have.  Again AFAIK, the pay as you go LD plan has no monthly fee but bills at $0.10/min.  The Simply 5 plan is $4.99/mo and bills at $0.05/min.  There is no free long distance with Cox.

Your other option is getting a Google Voice number.  It's free and gives unlimited free calling to anywhere in the USA and Canada.  Google Voice provides free voicemail too.

Alright thanks very much! I didn't necessarily want the phone but it came with the package and it made my bill cheaper. So I thought if I have it I might as well figure it out and use it. Thanks again!
